GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College James Pedas Professor of Communication Dane S. Claussen, Ph.D., published a book review in the Winter 2016 issue of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, the world’s oldest scholarly journal in journalism and mass communication research.

Claussen, who also is Chair of the Department of Media, Communication and Public Relations and Executive Director of the James Pedas Communication Center, reviewed “Content is King: News Media Management in the Digital Age,” edited by Gary Graham, Anita Greenhill, Donald Shaw and Chris J. Vargo.

The book, Claussen writes, is an “international effort to summarize issues and ideas about how regional newspapers can compete with the Internet.” Claussen’s review is generally not favorable, criticizing the book for including minimal original contributions to scholarly literature, minimal or poor choices of references, overlooking many important facts about the current newspaper industry, and providing little practical advice for regional newspapers competing with the Internet.

Claussen is the former publisher and editor of daily, weekly, biweekly and monthly newspapers in Wisconsin, Oregon and Washington state. A former newspaper management consultant and media mergers/acquisitions broker, he has taught media management courses regularly for 15 years and conducted academic research on media management. Claussen is the former head of the Media Management, Economics & Entrepreneurship Division for the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication.

In addition to his doctorate in mass communication from the University of Georgia, he holds an M.B.A. from The University of Chicago. He received the Pedas Endowed Chair in Communication in 2015.
