Jasper String Quartet to Perform at Thiel College

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College presents the Jasper String Quartet in concert at the David Johnson Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Winner of the 2012 Cleveland Quartet Award, the Jasper String Quartet has been hailed as “sonically delightful and expressively compelling” (The Strad) and as “powerful” (The New York Times). Based in New Haven, Conn., the quartet holds ensemble-in-residence positions at Oberlin Conservatory of Music of Ohio and Classic Chamber Concerts in Naples, Fla. They were the first ensemble to win the Yale School of Music’s Horatio Parker Memorial Prize (2009), an award established in 1945 and selected by the faculty for “best fulfilling… lofty musical ideals.” For more information, please visit their website.

The group’s members include J Freivogel (violin), Sae Chonabayashi (violin), Sam Quintal (viola) and Rachel Henderson Freivogel (cello). They will perform pieces by Franz Joseph Haydn, György Sándo Ligeti and Joseph-Maurice Ravel.

The Jasper String Quartet is the 11th concert of Thiel’s Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series, which began in fall 2007. Con Spirito presents concerts each year, featuring top chamber music groups from across the country. The series was created in honor of the late daughter of Dr. Glen Johnson H’88, Thiel College Board of Trustees chairman emeritus, and his wife, LaVonne, generous friends of the college. The home of the Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series is the David Johnson Memorial Chapel, dedicated in 2006 and named in honor of the Johnsons’ late son.
