IMANI WINDS TO PERFORM AT THIEL COLLEGE Performance part of Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series Oct. 5, 2011
One of North America’s premier wind quintets, Imani Winds has established itself as one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the United States. Since 1997, this Grammy-nominated quintet has carved out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, genre-blurring collaborations and inspirational outreach programs. With two member composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new work, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while bridging European, American, African and Latin American traditions. The group’s members include Valerie Coleman (flute), Toyin Spellman-Diaz (oboe), Mariam Adam (clarinet), Jeff Scott (French horn) and Monica Ellis (bassoon). The concert includes music by Mongo Santamaria, Danilo Perez, Pavel Haas, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Gene Kavadlo and Simon Shaheen. The Imani Winds performance is the ninth concert of Thiel’s Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series, which began in fall 2007. Con Spirito presents concerts each year, featuring top chamber music groups from across the country. The series was created in honor of the late daughter of Dr. Glen Johnson H’88, Thiel College Board of Trustees chairman emeritus, and his wife, LaVonne, generous friends of the college. The home of the Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series is the David Johnson Memorial Chapel, dedicated in 2006 and named in honor of the Johnsons’ late son. For more information about the concert, please contact the Thiel College Office of Special Events at 724-589-2240.
