THIEL COLLEGE NAMES VICE PRESIDENT FOR FINANCE AND MANAGEMENT Oct. 21, 2010 GREENVILLE, PA – Thiel College announced today that Greg Garber has been appointed vice president for finance and management, a position he will assume in early November. Garber has substantial not-for-profit experience serving as a senior financial executive in both the healthcare industry and higher education. His most recent positions include interim chief financial officer and interim athletic director at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. He has held vice president positions at both St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., where he was vice president for business and finance and treasurer, and Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., where he was vice president for finance/human resources and treasurer. He served for many years as the chief financial officer and treasurer at LHS Inc./Lutheran Health Systems in Fargo, N.D. Garber also has experience in the classroom, having served as a tenured assistant professor of business at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. “Greg Garber’s decades of service in healthcare and higher education demonstrate his commitment to the ideals of service, integrity and excellence on which Thiel is founded,” said Dr. Troy D. VanAken, Thiel College president. “I believe that Thiel will benefit from not only his extensive financial and business experience, but also from his consensus building, open communication and ability to be both a leader and a contributing member of a team. We look forward to his contributions to the Thiel community.” Garber holds an M.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and bachelor’s degree in business administration (with a major in accounting) from the University of North Dakota. As vice president for finance and management, Garber will serve as the principal adviser to the president on matters of finance, human resources, and general administration; coordinate budget management and development across campus; oversee the facilities and equipment of the College; and serve as the lead on risk management, procurement, auditing and insurance. Garber also will be a member of the President’s Cabinet and serve as co-chair of the Institutional Planning and Budget Committee. Originally from North Dakota, Garber currently alternates living at a family lake home in northwestern Minnesota and Janesville, Wis., where his wife, Naomi, serves as administrative pastor of First Lutheran Church, an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation. Their daughter, Kristina, lives in Helensburgh, Scotland, with her husband, Andy O'Connor, and their three children, Frankie, Aiden and Jevan.
