area high school students on Wednesday, May 13. High school seniors Joanna Sterling, Commodore Perry High School, and Sarah Tyler, Jamestown High School, were named Concurrent Enrollment Students of the Year for 2007–08.
Sterling and Tyler, along with numerous other juniors and seniors from Commodore Perry, Jamestown, Greenville, Reynolds and Lakeview high schools, attended Thiel during the 2007-08 school year while still enrolled in high school. Sterling and Tyler were chosen for the award after meeting certain criteria, including completion of 12 or more semester credits, an exemplary college grade point average, attendance at special concurrent enrollment meetings, a display of leadership qualities and a clearly defined path for their future studies. Both students earned a 4.0 grade point average at the college while fulfilling all other award criteria.
Dean of Educational Outreach John Rindy also announced on Wednesday that the anticipated concurrent enrollment for 2008–09 will consist of at least 40 local high school students.
“I am so excited about having this growing number of exceptional young students on our campus,” Rindy said. “This truly prepares them to live, study and get involved in a campus environment. I also applaud the principals and guidance counselors from Greenville, Jamestown, Reynolds, Commodore Perry and Lakeview for encouraging these students to branch out in their preparation for college life.”
Thiel offers two separate programs for high school students including the Pennsylvania Dual Enrollment Program and the Thiel High School Scholars program. Each program provides special tuition discounts to qualified high school students who desire to begin to earn college credit while still enrolled in high school.
