GREENVILLE, PA – For the third year, Thiel College education students will present a mock trial to local elementary school students. This year’s trial will be held at the Jamestown Elementary School in Jamestown, Pa. on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 11:30 a.m. The trial is expected to last 30 minutes.
The Thiel students will be placing “Curly Pig” on trial as the defendant and the “Big Bad Wolf” as the plaintiff. The characters are from the classic children’s story “The Three Little Pigs.”
The mock trial has proven to be an effective learning tool for elementary school students, says Professor Connie Reinhart of Thiel’s education department, whose Methods in Social Science class is presenting the trial. The presentation will help the Jamestown students to develop knowledge about the law, questioning techniques, critical thinking and oral advocacy skills.
“A good mock trial leaves the elementary-age students and other audience members with an appreciation of the difficult jobs that judges, lawyers and juries have,” says Reinhart. The trial shows how relevant facts are presented and legal arguments are made during the course of a real legal battle.
