thiel college hosts d10 legends night

Event to raise funds for wrestling scholarships and Thiel wrestling program

December 18, 2007

GREENVILLE, PA – Fans of high school wrestling have a special night to look forward to this year—the first D10 Legends Night at Thiel College on Friday, Dec. 21. in the Rissell-Beeghley Gymnasium.

The District 10 Legends Night was created by Thiel College assistant wrestling coach Jeff Linn ’02. This special night will feature NCAA All-Americans, legendary coaches, former state champions and place winners from Pennsylvania District 10, which includes Crawford, Erie, Mercer, Venango and Warren counties, on the same mat on the same night. The event will also include two former Thiel College NCAA All-Americans, Kyle Brown ’07 and Corey Murphy ’07, competing one final time at “home.”

All proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships at the D10 Legends Night will benefit the District 10 Wrestling Scholarship Fund and the Thiel College Wrestling program.

“Our goal with this event is to make it possible for more deserving seniors to have the opportunity to continue their academic/athletic careers at the collegiate level,” says Linn, who is also the assistant director of admissions at Thiel. “Talented student-athletes shouldn’t have to abandon their dreams because of difficulties in finding funding for college. This event will directly benefit the entire wrestling community and should be a fun night for all who attend.”

Wrestlers are divided up into two teams, the Blue Team and the Gold Team. The Blue Team roster includes coaches Neal Lineman (Reynolds) and Brian Hills (Reynolds), and wrestlers Doug Woods (Reynolds), Alec Miller (Grove City), Ben McMillen (Conneaut Lake), Chris Cox (Jamestown), Joey Ciotti (Girard), Ryan Maravich (McDowell), John Svirbly (Reynolds), Corey Murphy (Corry), Jimmy Gibson (Kennedy Catholic), Zach Schafer (Northwestern), Josh Moore (Franklin) and Kyle Brown (Meadville). The Gold Team roster includes coaches Bob Parker (Commodore Perry) and Richard Lumley (Meadville), and wrestlers Justin Kiser (Greenville), Charley Carbaugh (Oil City), Matt Hogue (Cochranton), Jeff Longstreth (Meadville), Hayden Hawthorne (Commodore Perry),  Braden Bice (Mercer), Wes Sidlinger (Commodore Perry), Barry Anderson (Meadville), Chris Hogue (Cochranton), Ben Boozer (Cochranton), Chris Elliot (Kennedy Christian) and Josh Pearce (Commodore Perry).

The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the opening ceremony begins at 8 p.m. Matches will begin at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children and are available at the door on the night of the event.

If you are unable to attend the event and still would like to contribute, please contact Linn at 724-589-2757 or jelinn@thiel.edu. More information about D10 Legends Night can be found at www.legendsnight.com.
