Dr. Mervin Newton appointed interim vice president of academic affairs at thiel

August 10 , 2007

GREENVILLE, PA –Dr. Mervin E. Newton, professor of mathematics and interim dean of faculty, has been appointed interim vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college at Thiel College for the 2007-08 academic year, effective immediately.

In his new position, Newton will continue to work closely with Thiel College’s interim president, Robert C. Olson ’60. His new duties include development of the college’s academic and instructional programming, budgets, long-range plans, and faculty and faculty development.

As dean of the college, Newton’s duties include all responsibilities associated with instruction, including development of the academic schedule and service on all instructionally-related committees, including Curriculum Study, Academic Standing, Promotion and Tenure, and Faculty Council. In addition, he holds a leadership position in the recruitment, selection and retention of full-time and adjunct faculty appointments. 

Newton joined the faculty in 1970 as an assistant professor in mathematics. He earned his bachelor’s at Santa Clara University and his master’s and doctorate at University of New Mexico. A member of the Mathematical Association of America, Newton is the inventor of a calculator for the blind and has published numerous articles and is in the process of publishing a math book.
