THIEL COLLEGE'S HALLER ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES OUTSTANDING BUSINESS PLAN AWARDS WINNERS
For immediate release February 14, 2005

GREENVILLE, PA - Four Thiel College students were recognized as recipients of the Haller Enterprise Institute's Outstanding Business Plan Award. Each student was awarded a $500 scholarship and presented their business plan and ideas to the members of the Haller advisory board at a dinner meeting on Jan. 31 in the Sawhill-Georgian Room on the Thiel College campus.

Adam Guthrie of Emlenton, Pa., created a business plan for Beaker's Oasis pizza parlor and bar. Market research of the local population and competitors enabled Guthrie to determine that his company would have to provide the most friendly and professional service to succeed. Guthrie is a business administration major at Thiel with a minor in mortuary science. He is the son of Sharon K. Osgood of Emlenton.

John Murtha of Pierpont, Ohio, a business administration and mortuary science major, chose to do a business plan for Guthrie Funeral Home and Crematory. Murtha plans to own and operate his own funeral home one day and creating this business plan gave him a solid foundation on which to base future decisions. Studying staffing and equipment needs, projected expenses and sales forecasts, Murtha has a realistic picture of the future. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Murtha of Pierpont.

Ryan Renwick of Jamestown, Pa., formulated a business plan for All Natural, a company that will provide the highest quality herbal supplements at an affordable cost. He learned that advertising and public relations play an important part in a business' success. Completing a three-year cash flow projection proved slow but steady growth in income as more customers are drawn to his business. Renwick is a business administration major. He is the son of Cinthia McClelland of Jamestown.

Phil Troutman of Cabot, Pa., is a management information systems and business administration major. He integrated his creative and practical ideas to compile a business plan for his current business, New View Design. His mission is to develop any number of media types and websites to help promote small businesses. He is the son of Michael and Sandra Troutman of Cabot.

All four students are members of the Haller Enterprise Institute whose mission is to encourage, promote and support entrepreneurship in Thiel College students. The Haller Enterprise Institute, originally named the Thiel College Enterprise Institute when it was organized in 1983, was renamed in 1996 when Pittsburgh residents Dr. Henry E. and Grace Mary Haller provided a $1 million gift to develop entrepreneurial education at Thiel College.
