THIEL PROFESSOR IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT BUSINESS INSTITUTE'S COMMENCEMENT
For immediate release October
7, 2004
GREENVILLE, PA - Dr. Arthur White, professor of philosophy at Thiel College,
provided the commencement address for the Business Institute of Pennsylvania's graduating class on Friday, Oct.
1 at the Business Institute of Pennsylvania, Sharon campus.
White's keynote address, "The Values of Work," urged students to concentrate on the intrinsic value of
work, and not simply on its financial rewards.
While the economic rewards are important, particularly in these troubled economic times, White said, lasting satisfaction
- as well as career success - comes from finding work, no matter what the field, that an individual finds important
for its own sake.
White joined the Thiel faculty in 1975 after teaching at the University of Richmond, University of Virginia, and
the University of Kentucky. He earned his bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1970, and his master's
(1972) and Ph.D. (1974) from the University of Virginia.
White, who resides in Greenville, serves as chair of Thiel's Philosophy Department and chair of the college's Salary
and Fringe Benefit Committee. He is a member of Greenville's Community Medical Ethics Project Committee and the
Community Ethics Consortium. He also belongs to the American Philosophical Association.

THIEL PURCHASES AED MACHINE THANKS TO UPMC FOUNDATION GRANT
For immediate release October

Thiel Campus Police Chief Don Aubrecht,

purchase was made possible with a $1,000 grant from the UPMC Foundation.

GREENVILLE, PA - The Thiel College Police Department recently purchased an automated
external defibrillator (AED) machine for campus emergencies, thanks to a $1,000 grant from the UPMC Foundation.
The AED machine - a small, portable, computerized device that delivers a shock to restore a normal heart rhythm
to someone in sudden cardiac arrest - is just another tool to better service the campus community, said Thiel Campus
Police Chief Donald Aubrecht.
"Hopefully it is something that we'll never need to use, but it is a necessary piece of equipment to have
on campus," Aubrecht said.
Aubrecht said all of his officers are trained to use the machine, which will benefit not only students and employees,
but any visitors to campus during special events such as commencements, sporting matches or performances.
The AED machine is as effective, if not better, than administering traditional CPR, Aubrect said, pointing out
that it features voice prompts and step-by-step instructions to the rescuer and is designed to advise a shock only
when necessary.
Thiel's AED machine will also serve as a back-up to the Greenville community, Aubrecht said.

FREDERIC HAER TO RECEIVE HALLER ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD
For immediate release October
5, 2004
GREENVILLE, PA - Frederic C. Haer of Brunswick, Maine, and owner of FHC
Inc., which designs and manufactures products for neuroscience and
neurosurgical research, will receive the Thiel College Haller Enterprise
Institute 2004 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Thiel President and CEO Dr. Lance A. Masters and professor David Miller,
executive director of the Haller Enterprise Institute, will present Haer
with the award at the annual Haller Enterprise Institute Entrepreneur of
the Year Award dinner at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, in the
Sawhill-Georgian Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.
Haer, a 1965 graduate of Thiel College, is the founder of FHC Inc., a
company that designs, manufactures and internationally markets quality
products for neurosurgical research and neuroscience, the study of the
brain and nervous system. While its headquarters are in Bowdoinham,
Maine, FHC also maintains a sales office at 180 Main St., Greenville.
FHC was among the first companies to develop microelectrode needles and
related devices used worldwide as an essential tool for the study of the
electrical signals emanating from the nerve cells.
Over the years, Haer and his employees have developed enhancements and
specialized devices essential to the advancement of basic research in
the workings of the nervous system.
FHC now provides microelectrodes for the clinical market. Neurosurgeons
use FHC's equipment for intraoperative microelectrode recording and
stimulation so as to map the electrical activity of the human brain in
order to precisely locate dysfunctional areas prior to removing or
modifying them.
FHC established microTargeting as its trademark for this technology,
which recently has found increasing use in the treatment of Parkinson's
symptoms.
FHC's microTargeting Platform using StarFix Guidance was named a winner
in the 2004 Medical Design Excellence Awards competition this year.
Haer has been a member of the Thiel College Board of Trustees since 1998
and in 2000 he was awarded the college's Distinguished Alumnus Award.
He and his wife, Jill, reside in Maine, and are the parents of one son,
Andrew.
The Haller Enterprise Institute, originally named the Thiel College
Enterprise Institute when it was organized in 1983, was renamed in 1996
when Pittsburgh residents Dr. Henry E. and Grace Mary Haller provided a
$1 million gift to develop entrepreneurial education at Thiel College.
