THIEL TO HOST VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE ON WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 22
For immediate release September 20, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - With the Nov. 2 Election Day just a few short weeks away, Thiel College will host a public voter registration drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22.

Thiel's "Use Your Voice Day" will allow interested students and members of the public to register in time for the fall election. Registration booths will be placed in the Haaland Commons and Rotunda Bistro area of the Howard Miller Student Center and in the lobby of the Academic Center.

The event at Thiel is sponsored by the college's Department of Political Science, Kappa Sigma fraternity, Thiel College Conservatives, Students for Political Progress, and the Center for Women's Leadership.

There is no fee to register to vote. Oct. 4 is the last day to register to vote in the upcoming election.

Voter registration applications are also available at municipal buildings, state legislators' offices, libraries, district justice offices, state liquor stores and all post offices.

SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY'S FLOYD KERR TO SPEAK AT THIEL SEPT. 21
For immediate release September 17, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Thiel College was recently awarded a $10,000 National College Athletic Association (NCAA) initiative grant that will bring Floyd Kerr, one of Sports Illustrated's 101 Most Important Minorities in Sports, to the college next week.

Kerr, the athletic director of Southern University, will speak at a public forum at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, in the Howard Miller Student Center's Lutheran Heritage Room.

A former assistant basketball coach and assistant to the athletic director at Youngstown State University (YSU), Kerr was appointed to his current position at Southern University in 2000. He has been touted for restructuring Southern's athletic department in less than two years by tightening operations and stressing academics.

Kerr is a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee and supervised the 2001 NCAA Basketball Tournament First and Second Rounds at the Louisiana Superdome. He has served on many Youngstown area boards, including the Mahoning Valley Cancer Coalition, the Valley Arts Guild and United Way.

Recognized as an All-American Collegiate Basketball player, Kerr was drafted by three professional sports teams, including the Phoenix Suns (NBA), the Utah Stars (ABA), and the Dallas Cowboys (NFL). He has been recognized for outstanding service as a member of the National Basketball Coaches Association, the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce as a mentor and received the Edna K. McDonald Cultural Awareness Award at YSU for his outstanding commitment to cultural diversity.

A native of South Bend, Ind., he earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education and a master's degree in educational administration from Colorado State University. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in educational leadership at YSU and has been selected as a fellow in the NCAA Fellows Leadership Program.

The NCAA offers annual grants to Division III schools that support the education and professional development of students, faculty, staff and administration. Student-athlete welfare issues, membership education of campus leaders and diversity are the targeted areas of interest.

THIEL COLLEGE HOSTS MERCER COUNTY CAREER FAIR,
PARTICIPATES IN VENANGO COUNTY CAREER NIGHT
For immediate release September 9, 2004

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Mercer County Career Fair event, sponsored by the Mercer County Guidance Counselors Association, will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, on the Thiel College campus in Greenville.

About 1,000 high school students from Greenville, Commodore Perry, Reynolds, Grove City, West Middlesex, Lakeview, Jamestown, Sharpsville, Mercer, Sharon and Farrell will be on campus.

More than 100 colleges, universities and technical schools, as well as businesses and armed forces representatives, will be on hand to distribute materials and talk with students about colleges and career choices.

The fair, which runs from 9 to 11 a.m., will be held in the Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.

The event is free and open to the public.

Following the daytime activities on campus, Thiel will participate in the Venango County Career Night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cranberry Mall in Seneca, Pa.

SYNDICATED ADVICE COLUMNIST TO SPEAK AT THIEL COLLEGE SEPT. 14
For immediate release September 8, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Author Harlan Cohen, who writes "Help Me, Harlan!," one of the most widely read syndicated columns directed at people in their teens and 20s, will speak at Thiel College at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, on the challenges of college dating and relationships.

Cohen will speak in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center. The author of two books, "The Naked Roommate: And 100 Other Things You Might Encounter in College" and "Campus Life Exposed: Advice from the Inside," Cohen is male voice behind the internationally syndicated "Help Me, Harlan!" advice column, distributed worldwide by King Features Syndicate.

He is a contributor to "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul III," a former columnist for The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition, and an expert whose advice has been featured in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today, and Seventeen magazine.

Cohen's writing career began at Indiana University's school newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student. After interning at "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," he launched his "Help Me, Harlan!" column, writing questions and answers to himself. Once real letters began arriving, Cohen consulted experts on and off campus to help with his replies. His delicate mix of honest advice, valuable resources and a touch of humor turned the column into an instant success on campus. The column soon spread throughout the country and beyond.

CELEBRATION WILL MARK ORDINATION ANNIVERSARIES FOR FOUR LOCALS
For immediate release September 6, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Thiel College and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, will honor four local ordained pastors at an event celebrating their ordination anniversaries.

A service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center, Thiel College, honoring the Rev. Dr. Stanford Stenson, the Rev. Dr. Curtis Thompson, and the Rev. Dr. Paul Baglyos and the Rev. Julia Fraser.

Officiating at the ceremony will be two Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) bishops: the Most Rev. Donald McCoid of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod, who will serve as presiding minister, and the Most Rev. Ralph Jones of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod, who will serve as preacher. The Rev. Martin Roth of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will serve as liturgical deacon.

Stenson, ordained Aug. 9, 1954, will be recognized for his 50th anniversary. He has served parishes in Minnesota, Iowa and New Jersey. At Thiel he has served as the dean of the Center for Lifelong Learning at Thiel College and the director of church relations.

Thompson, ordained June 4, 1974, will be honored for his 30th anniversary. Currently professor of religion at Thiel, Thompson also served as the institution's interim college pastor in 1986. Prior to his appointment at Thiel, Thompson served as pastor to a congregation in Minneapolis.

Baglyos, ordained Sept. 23, 1984, will be recognized for his 20th anniversary. Prior to his 2001 appointment to Thiel as college pastor, Baglyos served parishes in Harrisburg and Allentown.

Fraser, ordained Nov. 18, 1984, will also be recognized for her 20th anniversary. Currently, Fraser serves as associate pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and assistant to the bishop of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA. She served as interim campus pastor at Thiel College and also served a congregation in New Jersey.

THIEL COLLEGE STUDENTS WILL ATTEND STATE ENGLISH CONFERENCE
For immediate release August 31, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Four Thiel College English majors will accompany Dr. Mary Theresa Hall, professor of English, to the English Association of Pennsylvania State Universities (EAPSU) conference on October 21-22. The theme of this year's conference is "Counter-Narratives: Retelling the Value of English Studies."

Juanita Christner of Cochranton, Pa., Emily Eckert of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, Jason Merriam of Pittsburgh, and Bryan Sorrwar of Greenville, Pa., will participate in a panel and will deliver papers on the topic. Dr. Hall will serve as facilitator of the session and will also deliver a paper titled "Literary and Linguistics Studies: In Search of a Voice, a Song, a Soul."

Christner, a junior at Thiel, earned her General Education Development certificate in 1997. She attended the Business Institute of Pennsylvania from 2000-2002.

A 2003 graduate of Nordonia High School, Eckert is a sophomore at the college. She is the daughter of the Rev. James D. Eckert of Sagamore Hills.

Merriam, a 1998 graduate of Montour High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Merriam of Pittsburgh. He is a senior at Thiel.

A 2000 graduate of Greenville High School, Sorrwar is a sophomore at the college. He is the son of Mrs. Adina R. Smith of Greenville.

In attempting to underscore the import and evolution of English studies both in and out of the classroom experience, the panel hopes to demonstrate to the audience the literary and linguistic confluence of the voice, song and soul inherent in all of us. The papers will emphasize the value of English studies for our contemporary and future societies and the prominence of English studies within the humanities and the culture at large.

JOIN THIEL COLLEGE ON ITALIAN TOUR

GREENVILLE, PA - Join Thiel College alumni and friends on a 10-day tour of Italy from July 11 to 20, 2005.

Travelers will spend two nights in Rome and have the opportunity to visit Vatican City. A guided tour will lead participants to such the Piazza Venezia, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, and the famous Trevi Fountain.

From Rome, tourists will head to Assisi and see the Basilica of St. Francis before reaching medieval Perugia, the capital of Umbria. After Perugia, travelers will take a scenic journey through Tuscany's low-lying hills to the mystical city of Siena. From there, the tour will lead to Florence, the "Cradle of Italian Renaissance," where the group will spend two nights and have the chance to see Michelangelo's famous Statue of David.

The group will then spend two nights in Venice, where travelers can opt for gondola rides and take in the sights and sounds of the city. A trip to Como will be the final destination point of the tour before departing for the United States from Milan.

THIEL LAUNCHES NOTEBOOK INITIATIVE PROGRAM
For immediate release August 25, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - With the incoming freshmen arriving at Thiel College to begin their college educations, they are being met with the usual - a campus map, a student handbook, itinerary for orientation. They are also being met with something else: a brand new notebook computer.

This fall, Thiel College is launching its Notebook Initiative Program, which will provide all students - incoming and continuing - with notebook computers.

"This fall we will instantly become a total notebook campus, providing a new IBM notebook computer to every new and continuing student," said Thiel College President and CEO Dr. Lance A. Masters. "This exciting initiative is part of our ongoing effort to make technology available to all students."

Upon arrival at Thiel for fall classes, each student will be provided with a computer for use over the next three years. At the close of the third year, each student will be provided with an updated computer which he or she can keep after graduating from Thiel. If continuing students wish to keep their computers following graduation, the option to purchase will be available.

The personal computer will be an asset to learning as students will be encouraged to use it for note taking, course assignments and online research, Masters said.

A notebook fee will be added to the annual fee schedule.

Classes at Thiel College begin Monday, Aug. 30.

THIEL TO KICK OFF ITS 138TH ACADEMIC YEAR
For immediate release August 20, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Thiel College begins its 138th academic year next week when members of the class of 2008 arrive on campus for orientation activities.

Roughly 381 first-year freshmen will join the student body this year, while the college anticipates the total of new students - which includes first-year freshmen, international and transfers - will reach 450. The college expects about 1,250 students on campus for the start of fall classes on Monday, Aug. 30.

New freshmen will be welcomed at the annual opening convocation ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center. Dr. Lance A. Masters, Thiel president and CEO, is to host the convocation and join faculty and staff in welcoming the new students, parents and friends.

Dr. Robert Olson, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, and Roseanne Gill-Jacobson, vice president for student services and enrollment management and dean of students, will also address the students. Special music will be provided by Michael Bray, Thiel Choir conductor and professor of music, and accompanist Kathryn A. Gray, adjunct music professor.

During the ceremony students will sign the academic honor code, a statement of intent that students will abide by the academic requirements and regulations at the college.

A gala for new students and their families will follow the ceremony on the Howard Miller Student Center terrace and lawn.

Orientation activities for freshmen continue the rest of the week and throughout the weekend, acquainting new students with the college's people, places, traditions and expectations. Students will participate in a series of workshops and programs that address topics ranging from the meaning of liberal arts to learning the verses of the school song.

The orientation program also features a class trip to New River Gorge in West Virginia. There, students will participate in white water rafting and a ropes challenge course for team building exercises.

THIEL COLLEGE LISTED IN AMERICA'S BEST COLLEGE GUIDE
For immediate release August 20, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Thiel College has been listed as a best comprehensive college in U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges 2005 guide, released Friday, Aug. 20.

Thiel College was named to the top tier of the northern comprehensive colleges category. Comprehensive colleges are described as institutions that focus on undergraduate education and offer a range of degree programs in the liberal arts, which account for fewer than half of their bachelor's degrees, and in professional fields such as business, nursing, and education. There are 324 comprehensive colleges, ranked within four regions: North, South, Midwest, and West.

As a top northern comprehensive college, Thiel shares company with other Pennsylvania schools such as Mercyhurst, Grove City, Elizabethtown, Messiah, Cedar Crest, Wilson, Alvernia, Mount Aloysius and Delaware Valley colleges.

Tying at 24th with New York's St. Francis College, Thiel earned an overall score of 45.

U.S. News & World Report arrived at the rankings by evaluating peer assessments, average freshman retention rates, average graduation rates, percentage of classes with fewer than 20 students, percentage of classes with 50 or more students, student/faculty ratio, percentage of full-time faculty, SAT/ACT scores, freshmen high school percentage rankings, acceptance rates, and average alumni giving rates.

THIEL TO HOST VISIT DAYS THIS FALL

GREENVILLE, PA - The Thiel College Admissions Office will host a series of Fall Visit Days in September, October and November.

Visit days will be Saturday, Sept. 18, Friday, Sept. 24, Friday, Oct. 1, Saturday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Nov. 20.

Thiel College Dean of Admissions Jeffrey Baylor said the visit day is the ideal way for prospective students to learn about Thiel's majors and academic requirements, student life, athletics, scholarships and financial aid opportunities.

"What better way for high school students to learn more about Thiel than by visiting the campus and seeing everything first-hand?" said Baylor. "I hope students will take advantage of the opportunity and talk with me about how Thiel can work for them."

During the visit days, students will tour the campus, meet with current faculty and students and visit with admissions counselors.

EIGHT JOIN THIEL COLLEGE FACULTY
For immediate release August 20, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Thiel College welcomes eight full-time faculty members
for the 2004-2005 academic year, which begins Monday, Aug. 30. Four of
the new faculty had served as adjuncts in the past.

The new full-time faculty members, announced by Dr. Robert C. Olson,
vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, are:

Dr. Ralph E. Carmode, the Pedas Professor of Communication Studies and
chair of the Communication Studies Department. He holds a bachelor's
degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master's
degree from Brigham Young University and his Ph.D. in speech
communication from Pennsylvania State University in 1986. Most recently
Carmode had served as professor of communication at Jacksonville State
University, where he had been a member of the communication department
since 1987. He also served as associate professor at Murray State
University from 1984 to 1987, associate professor at Mississippi
University for Women from 1980 to 1984, and assistant professor at The
Pennsylvania State University. Carmode also spent 12 years working in
commercial and public television.

Justin P. Jakovac, lecturer of English. He holds a bachelor's degree
from the University of Notre Dame and a master's degree from University
of Richmond. He is pursuing his Ph.D. at Duquesne University. Most
recently he was an instructor at Slippery Rock University. He also was
an adjunct professor at Pennsylvania State University-McKeesport and a
teaching fellow and adjunct instructor at Duquesne University.

Jamie L. Pinchot, lecturer of mathematics and computer science. She
holds associate's and bachelor's degrees from Thiel College and a
master's from Robert Morris University. At Robert Morris University,
she has been a part-time member of the faculty and a member of the
computer information systems department.

Heidi Warren, lecturer of communication studies. She holds a
bachelor's degree from Malone College and a master's from Northwestern
University. With a background in broadcast and print media, she has
served as a reporter and producer with various media outlets.

Gerald Amon, lecturer of mathematics and computer science. Amon holds
a bachelor's degree from Grove City College and a master's degree from
Clarion University of Pennsylvania. He had served as a Thiel adjunct
prior to this full-time appointment. From 1966 to 1999 Amon was a
secondary math and computer science teacher in the Franklin Area School
District.

Donna Barton, lecturer of sociology. Barton earned a bachelor's
degree from the University of Tennessee and a master's degree from
Tennessee Technical University. She had served Thiel College as an
adjunct prior to her full-time appointment. She has also served as
instructors at Africa University-Zimbabwe, Union College, and Aims
Community College.

Martin Bright, lecturer of psychology. Bright received a bachelor's
degree from Thiel College and a master's degree from Edinboro University
of Pennsylvania. He had served as an adjunct at Thiel prior to this
full-time appointment. He has spent several years in the health care
field as a counselor, rehabilitation specialist and therapist.

Laurie Moroco, instructor of communication studies. She holds a
bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University and a master's degree
from Duquesne University. She has served the Thiel communication
studies department in the past as a full-time lecturer and an adjunct.
She has also served as an instructor at Slippery Rock, Clarion
University and Duquesne, as well as adjunct professor at Westminster
College and Pennsylvania State University-Shenango.

Other new adjunct faculty include Cathrine Bender, art; Jennifer Brown,
English; Liza Dexter, art; Shirley Kearney, English; Melissa Marsh,
English; Patricia Pringle Mitcham, English; Angelo Perrotta, Jr.,
mathematics and computer science; Beverly Titzel, education; and Michael
Walton, business administration and accounting.

LOCAL EDUCATOR SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM READING
For immediate release August 19, 2004

GREENVILLE, PA - Andrew Grover, mathematics and computer science professor at Thiel College, was selected to participate in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board's AP Examinations this June for computer science.

Each year the AP Program, sponsored by the College Board, gives more than one million capable high school students an opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses and examinations and, based on their exam performance, to receive credit and/or advanced placement when they enter college.

Over 6,000 readers from universities and high schools evaluated approximately 1.9 million examinations in 19 disciplines. Representing many of the finest academic institutions in the world, these men and women are some of the best high school and college educators in the United States, Canada and abroad.

The AP Reading is a unique forum in which academic dialogue between secondary school and college educators is fostered and strongly encouraged. "The Reading draws upon the talents of some of the finest teachers and professors that the world has to offer," said Tevor Packer, Executive Director of the Advanced Placement Program at the College Board. "It fosters professionalism, allows for the exchange of ideas, and strengthens the commitment to students and to teaching. We are very grateful for the contributions of talented educators like Andrew Grover."
