THIEL CONFERS DEGREES
DURING WINTER COMMENCEMENT
For immediate release December
15, 2003
GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College granted degrees to
26 men and women during Sunday's Winter Commencement exercises in Thiel College's Lutheran Heritage Room of the
Howard Miller Student Center.
Thiel College President and CEO Dr. Lance A. Masters welcomed the graduating seniors, their parents, and friends.
He also conferred the degrees and distributed the diplomas.
Dr. Mary Theresa Hall, associate professor of English at Thiel, provided the keynote address titled "The Integrity
of Education: Beyond Magic and Mystery."
Hall told the graduates that she believed we all instinctively seek spaces and places in which we live, learn and
are true to ourselves. Four themes, Hall said, attract us to particular points: ease of transition, creativity,
balance and restlessness.
"The fourth theme that may attract us to a certain space or place is, ironically, restlessness, also the one
that causes us to be seekers and to move away from the space or place that initially attracted us," said Hall.
"We hope that the education you have received at Thiel has opened your minds to the fact that you have just
scratched the surface of all there is to learn."
"We invite you to return to the sacred spaces and places at Thiel, and we entrust you with carrying Thiel
to the magical and mysterious places you will go that will be changed forever by your presence and Thiel's influence,"
she said. "In fairy tale terms, you're moving on to other magical and mysterious spaces. But if you can, look
homeward once in awhile. It will provide a fine opportunity for you to glimpse the intersection of the Thiel experience
and your current space-and to hold them in an embrace, even if it is only momentarily. You will then truly see
Thiel for the first time."
Following Hall's address, soloist Amanda McKeehan - a junior from Carlisle, Pa. - performed special music. Other music
throughout the ceremony was provided by Katherine A. Gray, adjunct professor of music at Thiel.
Dr. Robert C. Olson, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College, presented the class for degrees.
Jennifer L. Johnson
of Jackson Center, Pa., graduated summa cum laude, an honor presented to students who have earned a grade point
average of 3.8 or higher. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and also received departmental
honors.
Amber L. Eisel and Anthony J. Giaramita, both of Pittsburgh, earned magna cum laude and departmental honors.
Eisel graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in conservation biology, while Giaramita earned a bachelor of arts
degree in political science. Magna cum laude honors are given to those students with a grade point average of 3.60
to 3.79.
Johanna M. Blauser
of Hermitage, Pa., and Jason E. Fillhart of Reynoldsville, Pa., graduated cum laude, an honor given to those
students with a grade point average of 3.40 to 3.59. Blauser earned a bachelor of arts degree in speech and hearing
science. Fillhart, who also graduated with departmental honors, received a bachelor of arts degree in environmental
science.
Demetrius-Paul A. Richman of New Castle, Pa., who received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology, also
earned departmental honors and a Pennsylvania Department of Education teaching certificate.
Dr. Christopher H. Moinet, English professor, served as faculty marshal. The Rev. Dr. Paul A. Baglyos, college
pastor, provided the invocation and benediction.

Howard Miller Student Center.
D'Souza, the Robert and Karen Rishwain Fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace, Stanford

THIEL'S ACS
CHAPTER EARNS RECOGNITION
For immediate release November
14, 2003
GREENVILLE, PA - Thiel College's chapter of the
American Chemical Society (ACS) is one of 77 chapters selected for special recognition for activities conducted
during the 2002-2003 academic year.
One of the society's most important responsibilities is the pre-professional development of students in the chemical
sciences. One way the society accomplishes this is by offering undergraduate chemistry and science majors a chance
to enroll in the ACS Student Affiliates (SA) program.
The SA program has a current enrollment of 9,000 students and offers members the support, privileges and benefits
of the largest scientific professional society in the world.
Thiel's chapter achieved honorable mention status and was featured in Chemical & Engineering News, the society's
official national magazine, and Chemistry, the student affiliates' magazine. Award-winning chapters will be recognized
at the 227th ACS National Meeting in Anaheim, Calif., on Sunday, March 28, 2004.
Chapter adviser Dr. Kathryn Frantz also received special commendation for her role in the development of Thiel's
ACS chapter.
