THIEL COLLEGE HOSTS
MERCER COUNTY CAREER FAIR, PARTICIPATES IN VENANGO COUNTY CAREER NIGHT
For immediate release October 1, 2002
The Mercer County Career Fair event, sponsored by the Mercer
County Guidance Counselors Association, will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, on the Thiel campus in Greenville.
About 1,000 high school students from Greenville, Commodore
Perry, Reynolds, Grove City, West Middlesex, Lakeview, Jamestown, Sharpsville, Mercer, Sharon and Farrell will
be on campus.
More than 100 colleges, universities and technical schools,
as well as businesses and armed forces representatives, will be on-hand to distribute materials and talk with students
about colleges and career choices.
The fair, which runs from 8 to 11:30 a.m., will be held in
the Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.
Following the daytime activities on campus, Thiel will participate
in the Venango County Career Night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cranberry Mall in Seneca, Pa.
The event is free and open to the public. For information

THIEL COLLEGE HOMECOMING
COURT ANNOUNCED

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College will announce its 2002 Homecoming king
and queen at a bonfire scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Stewart quad on the college's west campus.
Senior candidates for queen are Crystal

Moore
is a psychology major at Thiel where she serves as the president of her sorority, Chi Omega. She is chair of the
Homecoming committee and has been a disc jockey for the college radio station, WTGP-FM, for two years. A 1999 graduate
of Austintown Fitch High School in Austintown, Ohio, she is the daughter of Arlene Moore and Terry Moore.
Stambaugh
is a 1999 graduate of Leetonia High School. At Thiel, where she is a communication and English major, she serves
as president of her sorority, Alpha Xi Delta. She is a member of the Sigma Tau Delta English honorary society,
assistant editor of the college yearbook The Endymion, and a member of the women's basketball team. She is the
daughter of David and Sherrin Stambaugh.
Stith,
the daughter of Wesley and Michelle Stith of Great Falls, Va., is a 1999 graduate of Unionville High School in
Kennett Square, Pa. A business administration major, Stith is active with Habitat for Humanity, Sister to Sister,
and the Organization of Black Collegiates.
Harris
is a communications major at Thiel. A 1996 graduate of Perry Traditional Academy in Pittsburgh, he is the former
president of the OBC, is a peer leader, and a member of the Thiel football team. He is the son of Dyane Rue and
Gary Walker of Pittsburgh.
Jacobs,
the son of Scott R. Manning and Charlene Jacobs, both of Cleveland, is a 1997 graduate of East Technical High School
in Cleveland. A psychology major at Thiel, Jacobs is active with the Organization of Black Collegiates and the
Thiel Activity Board.
Persic,
the son of Paul and Rhonda Persic of Wexford, Pa., is a 1999 graduate of North Allegheny Senior High School in
Wexford. At Thiel, where he has a double major in business administration and management information systems, he
has been named to the dean's list on five occasions and is a member of Chi Eta Sigma commerce honor society. He
also serves as social chair for his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and is a member of the ski and billiards clubs.
Wise
is a business administration and mortuary science major at Thiel. She has been named to the dean's list each semester,
was selected to the sophomore honorary Lambda Sigma, and has been named an All-American Scholar Athlete. She is
a member of the varsity cross country team and in 2001, received the Coaches Award. She is also active with Thiel
Christian Fellowship, Habitat for Humanity, and the Chi Omega sorority, through which she serves as a Panhellenic
delegate. A 2000 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, she is the daughter of Dick and Amy Wise of New Philadelphia.
McCabe
is a elementary education and psychology major at Thiel where he is active with the Thiel Activity Board and the
Interfraternity Council. He also hosts a weekly radio program, "Thursday Thunder," on the college's radio
station, WTGP-FM. A 2000 graduate of Apollo-Ridge High School in Spring Church, Pa., he is the son of John R. and
Frances C. McCabe of Apollo, Pa.
Day
is a conservation biology major and a wildlife biology minor at Thiel where she serves as social director of her
sorority, Sigma Kappa. A 2001 graduate of Ringgold High School in Monongahela, Pa., she is the daughter of Robert
and Michelle Day of Monongahela.
McKinney
is a history education major at Thiel where serves as sophomore class president and is on the executive board of
his fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi. A 2001 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Pleasant Hills, Pa., he is
the son of Douglas and Susan McKinney of Jefferson Hills, Pa.
Blakeney
is a business administration major at Thiel College. She is a member of Sister to Sister and the cheerleading squad.
A 2002 graduate of Euclid High School in Euclid, Ohio, she is the daughter of Samuel Payne Sr., and Sharon Blakeney.
De La Cruz
is a secondary education major and an environmental science minor at Thiel. She is also active with the Organization

WILLIAM E. PHILLIPS
TO EARN THIEL ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD

GREENVILLE, Pa. - William E. Phillips, owner of the Niles, Ohio-based
company Niles Expanded Metals & Plastics, has been selected to receive the Thiel College Haller Enterprise
Institute 2002 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Thiel President and CEO Dr. Lance A. Masters and professor
David Miller, executive director of the Haller Enterprise Institute, will present Phillips with the award at the
annual Haller Enterprise Entrepreneur of the Year Award dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the Sawhill-Georgian
Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.
Phillips - a native of Sharon and a graduate of Sharon High
School who earned his bachelor's degree from Thiel in 1954 -is the owner, chairman and CEO of the company he purchased
from Republic Corporation in 1985. Prior to the purchase, Phillips had worked for Republic since 1965, having served
as director of marketing, vice president of sales, vice president of purchasing, executive vice president, and
finally, president for 10 years.
He belongs to several professional and civic organizations,
including the Manufacturers Association of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania; Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber
of Commerce, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Industrial Information Institute Inc., and the Expanded Metal Manufacturers'
Association, to which he was the founder.
He is the past president of the Niles Chamber of Commerce
and a former member of the YMCA Board of Directors. He also had served on the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation
Board and has been a sponsor and participant of an American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team. In 1983 Phillips
received a citation and certificate of merit from the American Cancer Society.
Phillips resides in Warren, Ohio, with his wife, Mildred.
The Haller Enterprise Institute, originally named the Thiel
College Enterprise Institute when it was organized in 1983, was renamed in 1996 when Pittsburgh residents Dr. Henry
E. and Grace Mary Haller provided a $1 million gift to develop entrepreneurial education at Thiel College.

MEMORIAL BELL DEDICATION,
SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE NEXT FRIDAY

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College will hold a special ceremony
Friday, Sept. 27, dedicating the college memorial bell and remembering friends of Thiel who have passed away within
the past year.
The service, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday at the William
A. Passavant Memorial Center on the Thiel campus, will begin with the dedication of the Memorial Bell in memory
of James A. Gahagen Jr., son of Christine Gahagen Mong '63 of Greenville and her late husband the Rev. James A.
Gahagen '60.
The bell was originally hung in the bell tower of St. Peter's
Lutheran Church in Monaca, Pa., the German Lutheran congregation near the original site of Thiel College when it
was founded in 1866.
The service of remembrance, which will follow the bell dedication,
will honor Thiel alumni and significant members of the Thiel community who have died within the past year including
Dr. Omro Todd, former vice president and dean of the college, and Dr. Marlowe W. Johnson, founder of The Thiel
Choir and professor emeritus of music. The memorial bell will toll once for each name that is read.

THIEL TO PRESENT
POSTHUMOUS HONORARY DEGREE AT MARLOWE JOHNSON'S MEMORIAL SERVICE
For immediate release September 19, 2002
GREENVILLE, Pa. - A memorial service for Dr. Marlowe W. Johnson,
professor emeritus of music and founder and director of the Thiel Choir, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29,
at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, followed by a posthumous conferring of an honorary degree.
More than 75 alumni who performed with the choir between the
years 1953-1987 will sing during the memorial service. The Rev. Martin Roth '66 will officiate and be assisted
by the Rev. Robert Smith '55, also a Thiel Choir member and former pastor at Holy Trinity.
Immediately following the memorial service, Thiel President
and CEO Dr. Lance A. Masters and Thiel College Board of Trustees Chair Ruthanne Beighley will posthumously confer
an honorary doctorate of music degree to Johnson. Johnson's widow, Rae (Weiss) Johnson '59, will receive the citation
and hood on her husband's behalf.
Johnson had been informed, just prior to his Sept. 2 death,
that he was to receive the honorary degree.
"The degree is to reflect not only Marlowe's length of
service to Thiel, but the tremendous impact he had upon the lives of those who sang in his choirs," said Masters.
Thiel College will host a reception following the memorial
service in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the college's Howard Miller Student Center. The public is invited to attend.

CEREMONY TO HONOR FIVE

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Five will be honored at the Thiel College
Alumni Awards Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student
Center.
Held during Homecoming Weekend, the ceremony is sponsored
by the Thiel College Alumni Association and honors Thiel alumni and friends who have contributed to their professions,
their communities and Thiel.
This year's Distinguished Alumnus Award honorees include Charles
R. Cunningham Jr. '67 and James H. Cunningham III '77. The Young Alumnus Award will be given to Dr. Ruth Ann Armitage
Fraser '93, while the Service to Thiel Award recipients will be Dr. Robert C. Olson '60 and Jeanne Miller Blackson.
Charles R. Cunningham, retired director of Delphi Packard
Electric Systems, North American Operations, earned his bachelor of arts degree in history from Thiel in 1967.
Cunningham served on the Thiel College Board of Trustees and has returned to the college as a speaker with the
Senior Business Honors Program. He has also served on the Youngstown/Warren (Ohio) Regional Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors and the Great Lakes Chapter of the US/Mexico Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He and
his wife, Marybeth, reside in Warren, Ohio.
James H. Cunningham, station manager for WQED-FM, earned bachelor
of arts degrees in English and business administration from Thiel in 1977. Originally from Warren, Pa., Cunningham
has interviewed talents such as Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, Leonard Bernstein, André Previn
and Mariss Jansons. Cunningham has won numerous awards for his reporting and producing and in 1990, was awarded
the Thiel College Young Alumnus Award. He served on the Thiel College Alumni Board of Directors from 1995 to 2001.
Cunningham and his wife, Laurie, reside in Point Breeze, Pa., with their son, Jimmy.
Fraser, an assistant chemistry professor at Eastern Michigan
University, graduated from Thiel College in 1993 with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry and from Texas A&M
University with a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry in 1998. She and her husband, Daniel, currently reside in Dundee,
Mich.
Olson, Thiel's vice president for academic affairs and dean
of the college, earned his bachelor of arts degree in history from Thiel in 1960. While at Thiel, Olson was a varsity
letterman in wrestling. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees from Pennsylvania State University in 1962
and 1969, respectively. Olson joined the college's history department in 1965; in 1999 he was appointed to his
current position after having served as interim vice president and dean since 1998. He has served on numerous college
committees and has served as advisor to various student organizations. In 1996 he received the Thiel College President's
Award for Teaching Excellence. He and his wife, Margaret, reside in Mercer and have one son, Erik.
Blackson began her career at Thiel College in 1961 as a worker
in the salad department. In 1968 she was named director of food services, a position she held until her retirement
from the college in 1994. The Jeanne Blackson Refectory of the college's Howard Miller Student Center dining hall
was named in her honor in 2000. A member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, she has three daughters
and four grandchildren.

BOARD NAMES FOUR NEW MEMBERS

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Four Thiel alumni were named to the Thiel
College Alumni Board of Directors at the board's fall meeting on Saturday, Sept. 14.
New members include Heather
Achenbach, class of 2001; Molly Howsare,
class of 2002; Amy Myers
Noble, class of 1983; and Gary J. Witosky, class of 1979.
Achenbach,
of Greenville, is currently a graduate student at Slippery Rock University. She has been appointed to the Nominations
and Awards Committee.
Howsare,
of Transfer, is a staff nurse at the Greenville campus of UPMC Horizon. She has been named to the Career Services
Committee.
Noble,
of Greenville, has been appointed to the Admissions Committee. The owner of Chestnut Grove Farm Market & Crafts,
she and her husband have two children.
Witosky,
of Chardon, Ohio, has been named to the Development Committee. An adjunct faculty member in the Business Administration
Department at Thiel College, Witosky is the former president and CEO of Colfax Manufacturing. He is also a member
of the Thiel College Board of Associates. He and his wife have two children.
The Alumni Board of Directors is comprised of 25 representatives
from the Alumni Association who are elected to serve a three-year term and may be re-elected to a second term.
Members serve as volunteers working to further the interest of the college.

will travel through the streets of Greenville at noon on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The parade route is as follows:
Starting point: Riverside Park; travel south on North Race
Street to Shenango Street; turn right onto Shenango Street and continue to Water Street; turn left on Water Street
and continue until Main Street; turn left on Main Street and continue to College Avenue; left on College Avenue
until Ridgeway Avenue; left on Ridgeway Avenue. Ending point is at the base of Ridgeway Avenue.

THIEL RECEIVES NCAA
GRANT FOR DIVERSITY PROGRAM; JOHN ARTIS TO APPEAR AT THIEL NEXT WEEK

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College was recently awarded a $5,000
National College Athletic Association (NCAA) initiative grant that will bring John Artis - who was falsely convicted
of a triple murder with Rubin "Hurricane" Carter - to the campus next week.
"Caught in the Eye of the Hurricane" is a week-long
series of diversity programming featuring Artis and his outreach accomplishments.
In 1966 a 19-year-old Artis - who was preparing to attend
college on a track scholarship - was arrested with Carter, a renowned New Jersey boxer, for a triple murder. Artis
was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. After serving 15 years in prison, he was exonerated and now lives
in Virginia and works with troubled youth.
"The week's events center not only on one tragic night
in the life of John Artis, but instead on the accomplishments he continues to achieve and his outreach efforts,"
said Clyde Morgan, assistant coordinator for multicultural affairs.
Artis' outreach efforts did not begin after he released from
prison. While imprisoned, taught GED classes, was vice president of the Lifer's Group - the group which originated
the "Scared Straight" documentary - and served as the prison branch of the junior chamber of commerce.
Artis also secured the release of hostages during the 1971 Thanksgiving Day Riot at Rahway State Prison.
Events scheduled at Thiel for the week of diversity programming
include:
Friday, Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 15: The movie "Hurricane"
will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday and again at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Bly Lecture Hall of the Academic Center. Free
and open to the public.
Wednesday,
Sept. 18: Following a dinner with student leaders, a dialogue between Artis and members of the community will be
held. Community members will be given the opportunity for discussion and interaction with Artis. The event will
be held at 8 p.m. in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center on the college campus. Free and open to the public.
Thursday,
Sept. 19: Artis will speak to students in the college's criminal justice class.
The NCAA offers annual grants to Division III schools that
support the education and professional development of students, faculty, staff and administration. Student-athlete
welfare issues, membership education of campus leaders and diversity are the targeted areas of interest.

THIEL WILL HOST FINAL COMMUNITY MEDICAL ETHICS PROGRAM
ON SEPTEMBER 24

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College will host the third and final
portion of the three-part Community Medical Ethics Program (CMEP) from 1 to 3 p.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.
24, in the college's Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.
The program, "End of Life Decisions: How to Direct Your
Care," will feature Rhonda Gay Hartman of the Consortium Ethics Program of the University of Pittsburgh.
The session, which follows June's topic of "End of Life
Decisions: Making Your Choices," will focus on advance planning and directives for health care.
The program will provide information about:

How advance wishes should

THIEL COLLEGE RESPONDS TO DEATH OF DR. MARLOWE W.
JOHNSON

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College is mourning the loss of one
of its longtime family members, Dr. Marlowe W. Johnson, founder of the Thiel Choir.
Johnson, who passed away Monday, Sept. 2, founded the Thiel
Choir in 1953, shortly after his arrival on campus as assistant professor of music. For 33 years he directed the
choir, which traveled the eastern United States and Europe. The choir earned international acclaim under Johnson's
direction, and the organization recorded seven albums.
"We are deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Dr.
Marlowe Johnson," said Thiel President and CEO Dr. Lance A. Masters. "Marlowe had been one of the most
beloved professors at Thiel. He was deeply respected by his colleagues and students. I had a conversation with
him last Monday and informed him that he was to receive an honorary degree from Thiel which reflected not only
his length of service to Thiel, but the tremendous impact he had upon the lives of those who sang in his choirs."
Thiel intends to posthumously honor Johnson with an honorary
doctorate at a memorial service at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville.
The Thiel Flag is currently flying at half-staff symbolizing
Johnson's death.
Johnson, who earned professor emeritus status upon his 1986
retirement, remained active with Thiel College and directed the Thiel Alumni Choir for five years, beginning in
1996. In recent years during Homecoming weekend, Johnson and his wife hosted an Alumni Choir breakfast at their
home.
Johnson is survived by his wife, Rae, and three children.
