THIEL INTERNATIONAL CULTURE SHOW SCHEDULED FOR NOV.

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The International Student Organization
(ISO) of Thiel College will hold its third annual Culture Show at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Lutheran Heritage
Room of the college's Howard Miller Student Center.
The show will include dance, song, and demonstrations from the countries of Thiel's international students.
The program is free of charge and appropriate for all ages, especially children. All donations collected at this
year's program will be for the Heifer Project International, a program dedicated to ending hunger and poverty.

THIEL 'KIDS & CHEMISTRY' PROGRAM IS SUNDAY, OCT.

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel College chapter of student
affiliates of the American Chemical Society (ACS) will join other student affiliate chapters throughout the nation
to celebrate National Chemistry Week Oct. 20-26.
In celebration of National Chemistry Week, the Thiel student affiliate chapter of the ACS will sponsor an afternoon
"Kids and Chemistry" program on Sunday, Oct. 27, to generate children's interest in chemistry and sciences.
Fourth through sixth grade students from Reynolds and Jamestown elementary schools will visit Thiel from 2 to 4
p.m. for chemistry demonstrations and break into small groups to perform hands-on science activities. This year's
theme is "Chemistry Keeps Us Clean."
Some of the days' activities include making Silly Putty and slime, playing chemistry bingo, and determining the
cleaning effectiveness of various household liquids.
The program will be held in Room 100 of Thiel College's Academic Center which is located by the library. The event
is free and open to the public. Children should wear old play clothes to the event. Parents are welcome to attend,
although supervision will be provided.

BALAS, FORMER THIEL PASTOR, RETURNS AS SPEAKER FOR
HONORS CONVOCATION

GREENVILLE,
Pa. - The Rev. Dr. J. Paul Balas III, a 1962 Thiel graduate and Thiel College campus pastor from 1978 to 1989,
will serve as keynote speaker for the college's annual Honors Convocation at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in the William
A. Passavant Memorial Center.
Two hundred and fifty students - including scholarship recipients, academic honorary members and dean's list honorees
- will be recognized for their academic achievements earned during the 2001-2002 academic year. Freshmen scholarship
recipients also will be announced.
Balas is currently associate professor of pastoral theology at The Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg,
a position he has held since leaving Thiel in 1989.
Following his graduation from Thiel, Balas attended the Gettysburg Seminary where he earned his bachelor of divinity
degree in 1966. Balas was ordained a pastor of the Western Pennsylvania-West Virginia Synod of the Lutheran Church
in America in 1966. He received a master's degree in education in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1980, both from the University
of Pittsburgh.
Prior to coming to Thiel, he served as pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Pleasant Hills, Pa., from 1974-78.
Balas served as campus pastor for the Lutheran Student Foundation of Western Pennsylvania from 1969-74. His first
parish was Ascension Lutheran Church in Robinson Township from 1966-69.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities at the seminary, Balas serves as director of Supervised Clinical Ministry,
conducts counseling with students, and is involved with the Field Education Committee, the Committee on Admissions,
and various ad hoc and search committees. He is active with Music Gettysburg, the Seminary Ridge Historical Preservation
Foundation and the seminary's Spirituality Project.
Balas is also a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, the Ministerial Roll of the Southwestern Pennsylvania
Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the National Board of Representatives for The Association
for Clinical Pastoral Education. When time permits, Balas also preaches for and speaks to various congregations
and groups.
Pastor Balas is married to the Rev. Shelby DePriest. He has three children including Greenville resident Dr. Michael
T. Balas, associate professor of biology at Thiel College. He also has four grandchildren.

TWO STUDENTS EARN THIEL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Julie Greer of Uhrichsville, Ohio,
and Amy Sarno of Springdale, Pa., both sophomores at Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., were recently awarded one
of two Thiel Transfer Student Scholarships.
Greer and Sarno will both receive a renewable half-tuition award that will adjust annually to match current tuition.
In order to qualify for the scholarship, transfer students who had already been accepted for fall admission to
Thiel by July 10 must have had a transfer grade point average of 3.0 or higher and a minimum of 12 credits taken
at previous institution.
An English major at Thiel, Greer is a member of the Thiel Activities Board, Habitat for Humanity and the English
club. A 2001 graduate of Claymont High School, she is the daughter of Randy and Janet Greer. She is a transfer
student from Youngstown State University.
Sarno, also an English major at Thiel, is a member of the Thiel Activities Board, Habitat for Humanity, Thiel Christian
Fellowship, and the English club. A 2001 graduate of Springdale High School, she is the daughter of Anthony and
Robin Sarno. She is a transfer student from Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa.

THIEL COLLEGE HOSTS MERCER COUNTY CAREER FAIR, PARTICIPATES
IN VENANGO COUNTY CAREER NIGHT
For immediate release October 1, 2002
The Mercer County Career Fair event, sponsored by the
Mercer County Guidance Counselors Association, will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, on the Thiel campus in Greenville.
About 1,000 high school students from Greenville, Commodore Perry, Reynolds, Grove City, West Middlesex, Lakeview,
Jamestown, Sharpsville, Mercer, Sharon and Farrell will be on campus.
More than 100 colleges, universities and technical schools, as well as businesses and armed forces representatives,
will be on-hand to distribute materials and talk with students about colleges and career choices.
The fair, which runs from 8 to 11:30 a.m., will be held in the Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.
Following the daytime activities on campus, Thiel will participate in the Venango County Career Night from 6 to
8 p.m. at the Cranberry Mall in Seneca, Pa.
