THIEL COLLEGE PHI THETA PHI FRATERNITY EARNS AWARD
FOR PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel College fraternity Phi
Theta Phi recently received a 2002 Outstanding Philanthropic Organization Award by the western Pennsylvania chapter
of the Association of Fundraising Professionals for the group's philanthropic contributions.
The members of Phi Theta Phi, who have conducted an annual fundraising walk-a-thon to Pittsburgh Children's Hospital
since 1965, were honored at a National Philanthropy Day luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 19 in Pittsburgh.
Past recipients of the Outstanding Philanthropic Organization Award include the Westinghouse Foundation, Howard
Heinz Endowment, Bayer Foundation, and the PNC Foundation.
The Thiel fraternity has collected over $1 million for Children's Hospital - the only free-standing hospital in
western Pennsylvania dedicated solely to the care of infants, children and young adults - by walking to the Pittsburgh
hospital each December, collecting donations along the way.
The group's annual 100-mile walk-a-thon - in which active Phi Theta Phi brothers, fraternity alumni, and a number
of Thiel employees and friends participate - will be held this year on Dec. 6 and 7. This year's goal has been
set at $50,000.

INDIAN LITERATURES IS TOPIC OF LECTURE NEXT WEEK

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Dr. Valerie Ritter, assistant professor
at the University of Chicago, will speak at Thiel College at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Lutheran Heritage
Room of the college's Howard Miller Student Center as part of the college's Science and Our Global Heritage Lecture
Series.
Ritter, who will speak on the topic of "Taste: An introduction to Indian literatures," teaches Hindi
and South Asian literatures at the University of Chicago.
She has also taught at the University of Virginia and earned her Ph.D. in Asian languages and literature from the
University of Washington, Seattle.
Her interests and expertise span from classical Sanskrit poetry to medieval and modern Hindi literature. Her dissertation
addressed the concerns of the early poets of modern Hindi literature.
This lecture - co-sponsored by Thiel's Women's Leadership Program and Thiel's Global Institute - is free and open
to the public.

THIEL PROFESSORS TO DISCUSS U.S. FOREIGN POLICY ON
IRAQ

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College will host a faculty
panel discussion regarding the United States' foreign policy on Iraq from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the
Lutheran Heritage Room of the college's Howard Miller Student Center. The public is invited to attend.
Panelists will include Dr. James Bloomfield, professor of history; Dr.
Arthur White, professor of philosophy; Dr. Kristin Kiblinger,
assistant professor of religion; Dr. Jennifer Griffin, associate professor of psychology; Dr.
William M. Downer, professor of political science;
Dr. Robert Wells,
professor of political science; and James Koshan, assistant professor of history.
Time will be allotted for audience members to ask questions. The event is free and open to the public.

HICKORY HIGH
SCHOOL EARNS THIEL HOURGLASS AWARD

GREENVILLE,
Pa. - Hickory High School in Hermitage, Pa., was recently presented with the second annual Thiel Hourglass Award,
which is given to the high school that sends the largest number of students to Thiel.
During 2002, 11 Hickory High School graduates enrolled at Thiel. That is the largest contingent of students from
one particular school.
The Thiel students who graduated from Hickory High School are Robert
Byerly, Melissa Fahmey, Angela Fiore, Amanda Kokoski, Rachel Logue, Adrienne Rundorff, Ashley Slicker, Laura Slovesko,
Andrew Staul, Jarrett Takash and Justin Wilds.

HOLIDAY EVENTS
FOR THIEL ANNOUNCED

With the holiday season just a few short weeks around
the corner, Thiel College has announced its Christmas schedule of events.
Advent Lessons & Carols will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 in the Lutheran Heritage Room
of the college's Howard Miller Student Center (HMSC). The community is invited to the traditional service of scripture
readings and the singing of favorite Christmas hymns and carols. Event is free and open to the public.
Christmas by Candlelight is scheduled for two evenings in December - at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec.
5 and 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. Enjoy a lavish evening of food and entertainment in the elegant Sawhill-Georgian Room
of the HMSC. The program will feature performances by The Rosewood Trio and Thiel College students. Wine and hors
d'oeuvres will be followed by a traditional holiday dinner. There is a fee and reservations are due by Friday,

The Annual Christmas Festival is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in the college's William A.
Passavant Memorial Center. Experience beautiful Christmas music performed by the Thiel College Choir, Chamber Singers,
Thiel Band, and Thiel Handbell Ringers. The event is free and open to the public.
Following the festival, join us for December's Best Holiday Buffet at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in the dining hall
of the Howard Miller Student Center. Bring the entire family for a feast of hand carved pork loin and other traditional

POPULATION EXPERT TO ADDRESS PUBLIC FORUM AT THIEL
COLLEGE

GREENVILLE,
Pa. - Werner Fornos, president of the Washington, D.C. based Population Institute, will address a public forum
at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center at Thiel College as
part of the college's Science and Our Global Heritage Lecture Series.
An internationally recognized expert on world population issues, Fornos will deliver a lecture titled, "Population
and the Next Generation: Youth and Adolescents."
The Population Institute, located in Washington, D.C., is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving
a more equitable balance between the world's population, environment and resources. The Institute has members in
more than 174 countries.
Fornos has been president of the Population Institute for more than 20 years. He makes frequent national television
and radio appearances and contributes to newspaper and magazine articles that have appeared in such national publications
as the Dallas Morning News, Chicago Sun-Times, The New York Times and the Washington Post.
Named one of the 100 most influential persons in development and environment by the New York based Earth Times
for the third consecutive year, Fornos is a multiple Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow; a recipient of the
Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Maryland and most recently the recipient of the Order of Merit,
the highest distinction granted by the German government to a non-German citizen in recognition of humanitarian
efforts.
He has dedicated his energies and talents to speaking to diverse audiences, from college students and civic organizations,
to U.S. and UN officials - pressing for "rational solutions to the population problem."
The event is free and open to the public.
