BARRY SABOL '74 EARNS HALLER ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE ENTREPRENEUR
OF THE YEAR AWARD

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Dr. Barry Sabol '74, president of Strategic Consumer Research Inc. in Euclid, Ohio, will receive
the 2000 Thiel College Haller Enterprise Institute Entrepreneur of the Year Award at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26,
in the Sawhill-Georgian Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

Dr. Lance A. Masters and professor David M. Miller, a 1961 Thiel graduate and executive director of the Haller
Enterprise Institute, will present Sabol with his award as part of the Annual Entrepreneur of the Year Award dinner.
Sabol, originally from Pittsburgh, earned his bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Thiel in 1974. Currently
he is vice chair-elect of the Thiel College Board of Trustees. He has served as a board member for the college
since 1997.
As president of Strategic Consumer Research Inc., a full service market and consumer research firm, Sabol handles
all phases of business development and consulting, business management and project management.
From 1978 to 1982, he served as a director at Fox Consulting in Cleveland where he was responsible for the design
and development of his consumers' marketing images, attitudes and opinions.
Sabol earned his master's of arts degree in psychology and his doctorate in industrial psychology from Case Western
Reserve. His dissertation was "The Relationship of Goal Acceptance, Goal Orientation and Participation in
Goal Setting to Employee Performance."
He is a member of the American Marketing Association and the American Psychological Association.
He and his wife, Karol, reside in Highland Heights, Ohio.
The Haller Enterprise Institute, originally named the Thiel College Enterprise Institute when it was organized
in 1983, was renamed in 1996 when Pittsburgh residents Dr. Henry E. and Grace Mary Haller provided a $1 million
gift to develop entrepreneurial education at Thiel College.

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Alumni, students, staff and friends will celebrate Thiel College during the 2000 Homecoming festivities
on Oct. 6, 7 and 8.
Highlights of this year's Homecoming include the dedication of the recently renovated Howard Miller Student Center,
a golf scramble at the Greenville Country Club, an alumni awards reception, the annual Thiel Homecoming parade,
a Tomcats vs. Waynesburg football game, and the Thiel Alumni Choir Concert.
The schedule of events is as follows:
FRIDAY, OCT. 6
* 11 a.m. - Blue-Gold Golf Scramble at the Greenville Country
Club. Reservations required.
* 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Career Fair
* 1 p.m. - Lance Cooks, Howard Miller Student Center Dining
Hall: Thiel President Dr. Lance A. Masters shares his culinary skills. Reservations required.
* 2:30 p.m. - Countryside Wine Tour: Take a trip through Amish
country to Conneaut Lake for a tour of the Conneaut Cellars Winery. Reservations required.
* 6:30 p.m. - Alumni Awards Reception, Greenville Country Club.
This year's honorees include Distinguished Alumni Award recipients Frederick C. Haer '65, the Rev. Roy T. Lloyd
'65, and Dr. Robert E. Shimp '64. Shimp also received an honorary degree from Thiel in 1994. Thiel's Young Alumnus
Award recipient is Kevin Barger '93. The Alumni Service Award will be presented to Richard and Carol Patterson,
both members of the class of 1969, and Dr. Robert Burns '74. Reservations are required.
SATURDAY, OCT. 7
* 9:30 a.m. - In Search of Blue-Gold: Kids will learn something
new in Thiel's classroom about history, foreign language and literature. There will be hands-on activities at each
stop. No admission charge. Pre-registration suggested.
* 11 a.m. - Dedication of the Howard Miller Student Center:
Join us as the Thiel family officially celebrates the renovation and expansion of the HMSC.
* Noon - Homecoming Parade: Be part of the fun with the likes
of Mickey Mouse and Goofy during the Disney-themed parade.
* 12:30 p.m. - Thiel tailgate party: Wear your blue and gold
and come to a pre-game tailgate party at Stewart Field. The event is sponsored by the college's student services
department and the Thiel Alumni Association.
* 2 p.m. - Homecoming Football Game: Tomcats vs. Waynesburg
College, Stewart Field.
* 4:30 p.m. - Alumni post-game celebration at the Greenville
Country Club.
* 7 p.m. - Alumni Reception and Dance at the Greenville Country
Club. Hors d'oeuvres buffet and cash bar. Music by "After Five." Reservations required.

WILLIAM GAUS NAMED SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR

GREENVILLE, Pa. - William Gaus of Greenville has been named sports information director at Thiel College.
Gaus will be responsible for publicizing and promoting Thiel College athletics through media efforts and publications.
Prior to his appointment at Thiel, Gaus has served as a sports writer for the Record-Argus newspaper in Greenville,
Pa.
"We're thrilled to have Bill join Thiel's public relations efforts," said Betsy Fontaine, director of
public relations. "His background in the media and his enthusiasm for college sports will make him a valuable
asset to our department."
Gaus, a graduate of Greenville High School, earned his bachelor of science degree in sports communication from
Ashland University in 1996.

MARCIA DE KRAMER NAMED DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION
SUPPORT

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Marcia J. de Kramer of Jamestown, Pa., was recently named director of corporate and foundation
support for Thiel College.
De Kramer will be responsible for linking outside interests with the priorities of the college by identifying,
cultivating and soliciting support from foundations and corporate constituencies.
Prior to her appointment, de Kramer served as a school guidance counselor in Prince William County, Va., Sparta,
Wis., and Columbus, Ohio.
De Kramer earned her bachelor of science degree in education in 1969 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and
her master's of education degree in 1991 from Western Kentucky University.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., she and her husband, Steven, are residing in Jamestown. She has three children.

KERSTETTER NAMED EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE TO THE PRESIDENT

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Dr. Philip P. Kerstetter was recently named Thiel College's executive associate to the president.
Kerstetter will be responsible for managing priority projects for the college president, as well as.
Kerstetter, who had served as a member of the college's board of trustees since 1995, has nearly 30 years of experience
in higher education. Most recently, Kerstetter served as Edinboro University of Pennsylvania's dean of the school
of education and dean of graduate studies. He also served a one-year assignment as special associate to the State
System of Higher Education's vice chancellor for academic and student affairs.
"Dr. Kerstetter is a great asset to Thiel College," said Dr. Lance A. Masters, college president and
CEO.
Kerstetter earned his bachelor of arts degree in religion from Bucknell University in 1969, his master's of education
degree in college counseling and student personnel services from the University of Delaware in 1971, and his doctorate
in special education administration from Gallaudet University in 1985.

THIEL 'ART WALK' IS THIS WEDNESDAY

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The public is invited to a Thiel College "art walk" in the Howard Miller Student Center
(HMSC) on Wednesday, Sept. 20.
The art walk begins at 7 p.m. in the Weyers-Sampson Art Gallery with the opening reception for artist Steve Emmett.
The artwork of Emmett, a native of Greenville, Pa., will be featured in the gallery through Oct. 14.
Emmett - whose paintings are expressionistic figuration - is a 1974 graduate of Greenville High School and is a
professor of art at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
The gallery opening runs from 7 to 9 p.m.
Also occurring from 7 to 9 p.m.Wednesday evening just down the hall in the Lutheran Heritage Room will be a rhythm
and drumming workshop. Presented by Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan, the workshop is appropriate for any level
of player.
Participants will learn a variety of rhythms from various cultures in addition to musical techniques and concepts.
The workshop will also focus on listening and rhythmic ear training.
A hands-on workshop, participants are encouraged to bring drums. A limited number of drums will be available to
borrow and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Donovan performed with Rusted Root, an internationally acclaimed musical group, at Thiel on Sept. 9.
Both art walk events are free and open to the public. Emmett's work can also be viewed during the gallery's regular
hours which are from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

THIEL RECEIVES GIFT FROM AAL

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College recently received $2,340 from the Aid Association for Lutherans
(AAL) through the AAL Member Gift-Matching Program.
The total reflects AAL's matched portion of contributions received from members during the second quarter of 2000.
Annual gifts of $25 to $100 made by AAL members to participating Lutheran elementary or secondary schools, colleges
or seminaries are matched dollar-for-dollar by AAL.
Since the program was introduced in 1988, AAL has given almost $12 million to Lutheran academic institutions nationwide.
AAL, based in Appleton, Wis., is a fraternal benefit society of 1.8 million members who are joined together for
insurance, education and volunteer opportunities.

HMSC COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE IS SUNDAY, SEPT. 17

GREENVILLE, Pa. - A community open house for Thiel College's recently renovated Howard Miller
Student Center (HMSC) will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17.
Community members will be welcomed to tour the building and speak with various members of the Thiel staff. The
College Bookstore will be open, as well as the new Rotunda Bistro - a café featuring Starbucks Coffee. The
Rotunda Bistro, which is open to the public, is the only facility in Mercer County serving Starbucks.
The three-phase renovation project to the HMSC began in 1996. The final phase, begun in 1999, was completed in
June.
A hub of student activity, the building now houses the college post office and bookstore, as well as the student
services department and the college infirmary - all of which previously had been located elsewhere on campus.
The main corridor of the building is designed to appear as Main Street "storefronts," featuring the bookstore,
post office, various offices, conference rooms and art galleries.
Located in the rotunda area of the building are the Rotunda Bistro, a lounge, and the new Lutheran Heritage Room
- a 200-seat multipurpose room for student events, community programs, meetings and special dinners. Churches in
the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America raised over $300,000 for the
construction and furnishing of the room.
The Howard Miller Student Center will be dedicated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, during Homecoming Weekend.
Parking for the open house will be available in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center lot. Free samples of Starbucks
