PROFESSOR'S ARTWORK ON DISPLAY AT NATIONAL EXHIBITION
For immediate release October 20, 2000

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Artwork by Alvin Dunkle, professor of art at Thiel College, is included in the 19th Annual Hoyt National Exhibition at the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in New Castle, Pa.

Dunkle's entry, an etching titled "Valley View," is one of 45 works by 45 artsits selected for the exhibition. Three hundred and seventy two works by 176 artists entered.

The exhibit was juried by Dr. Louis Zona, executive director of the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.

The show runs until Nov. 4. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Dunkle, who resides in Greenville, has been a member of the Thiel College faculty since 1966.

212 STUDENTS TO BE RECOGNIZED AT HONORS CONVOCATION
ON OCT. 28

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Two hundred and twelve Thiel College students will be recognized for their academic achievements during the college's annual Honors Convocation at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center on the Thiel College campus.

Thiel College alumnus Dr. Robert Crutchfield, class of 1971, will serve as the keynote speaker.

"The Honors Convocation proudly recognizes outstanding students for their achievements and provides visitors with a first-hand look at Thiel's academic tradition," said Thiel College President Dr. Lance A. Masters.

Recognized at the convocation will be scholarship recipients, academic honorary members and dean's list honorees.

A former Mercer County juvenile probation officer and parole agent with the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole, Crutchfield - now a professor of sociology at the University of Washington in Seattle - will discuss "The Responsibilities of Excellence."

Crutchfield's teaching and research interests are in the areas of criminology and social stratification, with a recent research focus on labor markets and crime.

He was the former director of the Institute for Ethnic Studies in the United States at the University of Washington, has served on the Board of Directors for the Washington Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the Washington State Juvenile Sentencing Commission.

Crutchfield earned his master's and doctorate degrees in sociology from Vanderbilt University. In 1997 he received Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Washington. He is a founding member of the University's Teaching Academy and Faculty Fellows program.

THIEL HOSTS ECONOMIC FORUM ON OCT. 25
For immediate release October 18, 2000

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College will host a global economic forum featuring three experts in the field of economics at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

The forum, titled "The Global Challenge: The Changing Face of Economics," will focus on the status of three diverse nations - the United States, Brazil and the Ukraine.

Keynote speaker and forum panelist Mark Olson will discuss the United States. Olson is staff director of the Securities Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs in Washington, D.C.

The Securities Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the securities and insurance industries, the Securities and Exchange Commission and financial reporting.

Olson spent 12 years as president and CEO of Security State Bank in Fergus Falls, Minn. From 1988 to 1999, he served as a direct admit partner for one of the top accounting firms in the nation, Ernst & Young LLP.

He has also served as president of the American Bankers Association from 1986 to 1987, during which time he testified before six House and Senate banking, commerce and finance committees.

Dr. Gamaliel Perruci, an international strategic planning expert and the McCoy Professor of Leadership Studies at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, will discuss his native Brazil.

Perruci, who occasionally serves as a consultant to colleges and corporations dealing with international strategic planning, teaches and researches the impact of globalization on leadership development.

Kevin Cuthill, a business consultant and an expert in the field of eastern European economic development, will discuss the Ukraine.

Cuthill began his career as a Russian linguist and electronic warfare specialist. Cuthill has served as general director of Ukraine's Developed Technology Resources Inc., and FoodMaster Ukraine. He has also served as chairman of the board for the Ukranian dairy company Bilosvit.

The forum will begin with a keynote presentation by Olson who will discuss "The New Economy and New Lessons in a New Marketplace." Following Olson's comments, Perruci and Cuthill will join Olson in a panel discussion moderated by David Miller, chair and professor of the Norman P. Mortensen Department of Business and Economics at Thiel.

ART OPENING IS WEDNESDAY FOR THIEL SCULPTOR
For immediate release October 16, 2000

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The public is invited to an art opening featuring the sculptures of Jesse Amar, a Thiel College art lecturer, on Wednesday, Oct. 18 in the Howard Miller Student Center (HMSC).

The opening reception for Amar's artwork begins at 7 p.m. in the Weyers-Sampson Art Gallery, located in the HMSC. Amar's sculptures will be featured in the gallery through Nov. 11.

Amar, originally from Gloucester, Mass., earned his bachelor of arts degree in art from Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pa. He earned his master of fine arts degree in sculpture from American University in Washington, D.C., in 1996. Amar joined Thiel's faculty this fall as a 3D-design lecturer. Prior to coming to Thiel, Amar was an adjunct professor at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

During the reception, piano music will be provided Hwajin Song, a Thiel international student. Refreshments will be available.

The art opening is free and open to the public. Amar's work can also be viewed during the gallery's regular hours, which are from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

THIEL SECURITY DIRECTOR NAMED TO WHO'S WHO
For immediate release October 16, 2000

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The biography of Marshall Lillie, director of public safety at Thiel College since 1986, will be included in the 2001 edition of Marquis Who's Who in America.

Lillie earned a master of science degree in criminal justice from Mercyhurst College in 1984.

THIEL COLLEGE FAMILY WEEKEND OCT. 28-29
For immediate release October 13, 2000

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College Family Weekend will be held Saturday, Oct. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 29. Parents and families of Thiel students are invited to campus for various weekend activities.

Saturday includes a tailgate party prior to the varsity football game against Washington & Jefferson College, a wine and cheese reception hosted by Thiel President Dr. Lance A. Masters at which parents can meet other parents and faculty.
A harvest buffet dinner will be available in the Howard Miller Student Center; tickets must be purchased in advance.

Sunday, parents can join an ecumenical all-campus worship. A scholarship brunch will conclude the weekend's activities. The brunch, by special invitation, is for students who have received endowed scholarship support. Students and their families will have the opportunity to meet with the scholarship donor.

THIEL ALUMNI TO RECEIVE AWARDS DURING HOMECOMING CELEBRATION

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Seven dedicated Thiel College alumni will be honored Friday evening as part of the college's weekend Homecoming festivities.

Three alumni will be given the Distinguished Alumni Award. One will be awarded the Young Alumnus Award and three others will receive the Alumni Service Award.

Distinguished Alumni Award recipients include
Frederick C. Haer and the Rev. Roy T. Lloyd, both members of the class of 1965, and Dr. Robert E. Shimp, a member of the class of 1964.
Haer, who graduated in 1965 with a degree in chemistry, is president of the Maine-based FHC Inc., a company that designs, manufactures, and internationally markets quality products for neuroscience and neurosurgical research. FHC is a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of microelectrodes used in research and clinical markets.
Haer is also a member of the Thiel College Board of Trustees and chaired the campaign to raise funds for the Paul Bush '66 Memorial Fitness Center that was dedicated in May. He resides in Brunswick, Maine.
Lloyd, another 1965 graduate, is a communications professional specializing in religious and non-profit organizations. A pastor within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, he serves as the broadcast news director of the National Council of Churches based in New York City.
In 1999, Lloyd served as part of the Christian, Muslim and Jewish delegation to Belgrade, which secured the release of three United States soldiers held hostage by Serbian forces in Iran.
A former member of the Thiel College Board of Trustees, Lloyd provided the keynote address at Thiel's fall 1999 Honors Convocation. Lloyd resides in Ridgefield, Conn.
Shimp, who graduated in 1964, has served as president of McMurry University since 1993. Located in Abilene, Texas, the college is affiliated with the Northwest Texas and New Mexico conferences of the United Methodist Church.
Shimp received an honorary doctorate degree from Thiel College in 1994, the same year he served as the college's keynote speaker at the spring commencement. Shimp lives in Abilene, Texas.
Thiel's Young Alumnus Award recipient is
Kevin Barger, a member of the class of 1993. Barger, who served as the class valedictorian, is a program manager at Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield in Richmond, Va., the largest health care insurance company in Virginia. He serves as a director-at-large for the Thiel College Alumni Board of Directors. Barger resides in Mechanicsville, Va.

The Alumni Service Award will be presented to
Richard and Carol (Butz) Patterson, both members of the class of 1969, and Dr. Robert Burns, class of 1974.

Carol Patterson served as a school psychologist for the ARIN Intermediate Unit until 1987 when she resigned to devote her energies to a private practice specializing in child psychology, child abuse and custody evaluations. She has served on the Thiel College Board of Trustees and was active with the Thiel Women's Club.

Since 1974, Richard Patterson has managed his own private accounting practice. He has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

The Pattersons, who live in Latrobe, Pa., have served on a number of fund raising committees for Thiel, including the Decade for Leadership, Marlowe W. Johnson Endowment Fund for Choral Music and the Thiel 2000: Sharing the Mission campaign. They have served as class agents for the class of 1969 and acted as mentors to Thiel students interested in pursuing careers in accounting and psychology. Both are involved in the Thiel Alumni Choir.

Burns, a pediatrician, runs one of the largest private practices - Mansfield Pediatrics Inc. - in Mansfield, Ohio.

He has served on the Alumni Board of Directors, serving two terms as president. He has been a member of the Thiel College Board of Trustees, and has served on a number of college-related committees including Decade for Fellowship, Greenville Hall and Thiel 2000: Sharing the Mission. In 1988, he was named Young Alumnus of the Year by the Thiel Alumni Association. He resides in Mansfield.

The hors d'oeuvres and wine reception will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the rotunda area of the Howard Miller Student Center on the Thiel College campus. The awards presentation will follow in the Lutheran Heritage Room. The event is open to the public, although reservations are required and there is an admission fee. GREENVILLE, Pa. - Twelve students at Thiel College have been selected for the 2000 homecoming court, including six seniors, two juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen.

Six seniors will represent the senior class, including:

Representatives for the junior class are
Ryan Reed of BeLoit, Ohio, and Nancy Walter of North Huntingdon, Pa. Sophomore attendants are Justin Hewitt of Ellwood City, Pa., and Jordan Hart of Beaver Falls, Pa. Representing the freshman class are Jake Sevek of Columbiana, Ohio, and Natalie Mondine of Bethel Park, Pa.

The 2000 homecoming queen and king will be announced at 9 p.m. Friday during a bonfire on the campus' west quad near the Stewart dormitory. The court will also be recognized at Saturday's homecoming football game against Waynesburg College at Greenville High School's Stewart Field at 2 p.m.
