PHIS HOPE TO REACH $1 MILLION ON ANNUAL WALK-A-THON
For immediate release November 21, 2000
GREENVILLE, Pa. - As members of Thiel College's Phi
Theta Phi fraternity embark on their annual fund-raising walk to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh on Friday, Dec.
1, they'll have a bit more on their minds this year. A bit more money, that is.
After raising over $48,000 during last year's walk-a-thon, the Phis are this year in position to surpass the $1
million mark in contributions to the Free Care Fund of the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, the only free-standing
hospital in western Pennsylvania dedicated solely to the care of infants, children and young adults.
The annual 100-mile walk-a-thon - which features active Phi Theta Phi brothers, several fraternity alumni, and
a number of Thiel employees and friends - begins with the group's departure from Thiel at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec.
1.
From Greenville, the group will continue through Mercer, Grove City, Slippery Rock and Butler. Freeport, Pa., will
be the group's home for the evening as they spend the night at Trinity Lutheran Church. The walk will resume at
8 a.m. Saturday and continue throughout the day, with the group traveling through and stopping in various suburbs
of Pittsburgh.
The Phis will complete the last leg of their journey when they walk from Allegheny River Boulevard to the hospital
Saturday evening. Upon arrival at Children's Hospital, the walkers will tour the facilities and present children
with stuffed animals that had been carried along the walk.
Anthony Tronzo, chairman for the upcoming walk, feels confident that million-dollar figure can be reached. About
$32,000 is needed to reach $1 million, and Tronzo - a junior from McKeesport, Pa. - has set the walk goal at $55,000.
"The Phi brothers do such a tremendous job every year," said Gerri Giles, coordinator of media fund raising
and Free Care events at Children's Hospital. "They're such an inspiration and we look forward to each December
because we know they'll be coming. It means so much to us to have them put forth so much effort for the hospital's
Free Care Fund. They are a great group of men."
The Thiel fraternity, according to fraternity adviser John Hauser, has raised more money for charity than any fraternity
chapter in the world. But according to Tronzo, when it's all said and done, it's not about fraternity recognition
or how much money was made over the course of 33 years.
Instead, it's all about the children.
"Once you see the looks on their faces, you know that every step taken was worth it," said Tronzo. "It's
a difficult picture to get out of your mind. You see the problems these little children have to deal with day in
and day out, and suddenly our problems and quests for success don't seem so important. The kids are the reason
we walk. And to know that we helped at least one child makes everything worthwhile."
Contributions benefit the hospital's Free Care Fund, a fund that ensures children in western Pennsylvania never
will be deprived medical care.
The fraternity raises money for Children's Hospital by accepting donations prior to the walk and at intersections
and house stops along the walk. Anyone wishing to support the fraternity's effort may make checks payable to Children's
Hospital of Pittsburgh and mail to Anthony Tronzo, Phi Walk Chairman, Thiel College, 75 College Ave., Greenville,
PA 16125.

For immediate release November 3, 2000
GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College has been named as one of the
nation's most "wired" colleges, earning a top 100 rating on
Yahoo! Internet Life's "America's Most Wired Colleges 2000" listing.
Thiel's name was added to the list of the top 100 schools in the baccalaureate category, ranking number 73.
Judging criteria included examining each college's access and infrastructure by looking at the percentage of classrooms
wired for high-speed internet access, percentage of dorms equipped with computer access, and the percentage of
recent computer purchases.
Thiel rated 100 percent in the wired classroom category, a 90 percent in the equipped dorms category and 85 percent
in the number of public computer purchases made within the past two years.
Yahoo! Internet Life also looked wired administrative services, such as online registration and electronic application,
used at each institution.
The Yahoo! Internet Life survey was conducted in partnership with Peterson's, the nation's leading provider of
education information in print and online. All 3,631 open-enrollment accredited undergraduate two-year and four-year
institutions in the U.S. were invited to participate in this year's survey.
