ATTENTION ALL THIEL COLLEGE FACULTY AND STAFF!
For release June 29, 2000

On Monday, July 10, 2000 we will be closing the parking lot at the Gymnasium. The college has hired a vendor to do site drainage and re-surface this parking area with a new gravel substrate and asphalt. This work will be completed in about ten days, so all current users of this parking area are being asked to move to the large lot behind the Passavent Center.
Once completed we will have a beautiful new parking facility with striped spaces, handicap parking area, and lighting. If you have any questions, feel free to call the maintenance office at (724) 589-2175.
Thank you for your cooperation.

THIEL PROFESSOR TO PARTICIPATE IN ADVANCED PLACEMENT READING
For release June 27, 2000

GREENVILLE, Pa. -
Andrew Grover, a professor at Thiel College, was selected to participate this June in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) examinations in computer
science.

Each year the AP Program, sponsored by the College Board, gives hundreds of thousands of capable high school students an opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses and examinations and, based on their
exam performance, to receive credit and/or advanced placement when they enter college.

More than 1.1 million examinations in 18 disciplines were evaluated by over 4,800 faculty consultants from high schools and universities across North America. Drawn from various ethnic groups from every state, these
men and women are some of the best high school and college educators in the United States and Canada.

The AP Reading is one of the few settings in which academic dialogue between school and college educators is fostered and strongly encouraged.

"The Reading draws upon the talents of some of the finest teachers and professors that America has to offer," said Dr. Lee Jones, AP executive director at the College Board.

Grover, who joined the Thiel faculty in 1984, is a professor of mathematics and computer science.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TAKE TO THIEL COLLEGE CAMPUS
For release June 27, 2000
GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College isn't just for high school graduates anymore.
For the next few weeks children in grades four through nine will try their hands at higher education at this year's annual
College For Kids program. Sponsored by the college, the summer camp offers participants a
chance to sit in college classrooms and take "classes."

All for fun, of course, children will experience courses varying from journalism to entomology. No tests, no mountains of homework - just an educational opportunity for students eager to learn.

"It's a great way to introduce elementary and junior high school students to the college world," said Carol Adzima, College For Kids director. "Hopefully, this will open some doors to subjects that interest them."

This week and next, students in grades four to six will be on campus. Children in grades seven to nine will take classes from July 10 to 14.

"We are always excited when this time of year rolls around," said Adzima. "The kids are just filled with excitement - they have a contagious excitement for learning."

Adzima credits the instructors - most of whom are college professors, public school teachers, or area professionals - for taking time from their schedules to teach during the summer months.

"These are true teachers," Adzima said. "It's exciting to see them eager to share their knowledge."

Some of the courses being taught are music, Spanish, gardening, chemistry, magic, entomology, computers, food microbiology, journalism, poetry, sign language, archery, watercolor painting, and photography.

For more information about the program, contact
Adzima at (724)
589-2232.
