Independent Research

Independent student research projects conducted during the academic term, over winter break, or over the summer (including projects funded through Thiel research fellowships) are almost always found to be research projects by the IRB because the investigators intend to contribute to generalizable knowledge.

In these cases, the student researcher must submit a formal application to the IRB before beginning any research activities that involve human subjects.
