Drug Use Protocol Statement

(General Statement)

The drugs for which I am applying for a license will be used for anesthetic/euthanasia purposes depending upon the nature of the project.

Anesthesia:
Ketamine/Phenobarbitol, at appropriate dosage for animal in question, will be used for general anesthesia so that basic surgical procedures can be performed by faculty and students. Such procedures would include adrenalectomy, gonadectomy, placement of intracranial probes and recording devices. The anesthetics will also be used for restrain of animals during recording procedures.

Euthanasia:
The ketamine/Phenobarbital would also be used for proper euthanasia of experimental animals at the termination of particular experiments (i.e., brain probe experiments where additional procedures on animal tissue would be performed to verify probe placement).

All specific experimental protocols will be approved by Thiel’s Animal Care and Utilization Committee prior to experimentation.
