Grants, like scholarships, are another type of educational gift that students are not required to repay. Sources of grants include the federal government, state governments and Thiel College. You should also explore grant and scholarship options through your guidance or transfer counselor and local church, civic or community organizations.

FEDERAL PELL GRANT

Awarded to
students who meet certain financial need qualifications and who are working toward a first bachelor's degree or who are enrolled in certain postbaccalaureate programs that lead to teacher certification or licensure. After completion of the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) the government will notify schools of a student's eligibility. The amount of the non-repayable grant is not controlled by the individual college. All students requesting aid through Thiel must apply for a PELL Grant. Grant amounts are dependent on: the student's expected family contribution (EFC), the cost of attendance (as determined by the institution), the student's enrollment status (full-time or part-time) and whether the student attends for a full academic year or less.

STATE GRANTS

PENNSYLVANIA
Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA
) state grants are available for qualified Pennsylvania students. These grants, which range up to $4,000 per academic year, are determined by family size, financial resources and educational costs. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania takes the position its residents should not be denied the opportunity for a post-secondary education because of financial need.

To be eligible, students must demonstrate financial need in accordance with state procedures for such a determination. Students must also:
1. be enrolled as at least a half-time student,
2. be enrolled in a Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistant Agency (PHEAA) approved program of study of at least two academic years (or 1,800 clock hours at business or trade schools),
3. be enrolled in a school approved by PHEAA for grant purposes,
4. be of satisfactory character,
5. be a domiciliary (resident) of Pennsylvania,
6. be an undergraduate student (a student who has received his or her first baccalaureate degree is not eligible),
7. be a graduate of an approved secondary school or a recipient of a Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma,
8. Earn a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year to be eligible to recieve a grant the following year.

To apply, students must complete the FAFSA and release appropriate information to the state grant agency, by May 1 prior to the academic year.

Students may file electronically through the www.fafsa.ed.gov website or obtain an application from their high school guidance counselor, from a college financial aid office or from any member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Completed applications must be filed by the May 1 deadline. Early application is encouraged to ensure that qualified students receive grants.

Qualified veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible for consideration for state grants while they are undergraduate students. The veteran must comply with eligibility requirements. Each veteran will be considered on the basis of his or her individual situation and without regard to the financial information or status of the veteran's parents or guardian. Further details on this program ar available from the veteran's high school, Thiel College, or by writing directly to PHEAA, 1200 N. Seventh St., Harrisburg, PA 17102.

OHIO
Awarded to Ohio residents with demonstrated financial need. Award money may be used at educational institutions outside the state of Ohio up to a maximum of $600 per year. Students who complete a FAFSA automatically have their financial information forwarded for eligibility determination. Visit Ohio Board of Regents Website.

OTHER STATES
State grants/scholarships may be available to students from other states to attend college in Pennsylvania. Students should check with their high school guidance office for details and deadlines.

FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORUNITY GRANT (FSEOG)
The FSEOG Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students to promote access to postsecondary education. Priority is given to those students with "exceptional need" (those with the lowest expected family contributions, or EFCs) and those who are also Federal Pell Grant recipients. Eligibility is determined from FAFSA. These grants are made based on the level of federal appropriation and are non-repayable.
