Same-day services for urgent care and crisis intervention
are available through the CC and the counselor to help students manage
acute personal crises and provide them with the skills to function and
meet the demands of a campus environment. If you believe that you, you
or another student should be seen at CC the same day for an urgent consultation,
please call CC at 724-589-2754 immediately. If you have never talked with a counselor, you may have some questions about the process... Who is Eligible for Service?CC services are available at no additional cost to all students currently enrolled at Thiel College. Your problems need not be of monumental proportions to warrant support or intervention. Yet, many students feel that asking for help is a sign of weakness. This perception changes as they realize that confronting a problem is a positive sign of health and maturity. Having problems, feeling anxious or depressed, and needing help at various points in life are universal experiences. Being able to acknowledge those feelings is an important step in taking care of you in a healthy and appropriate manner. The CC counselor is available to help students gain perspective on
any personal problems. It can be helpful to talk with a skilled counselor
about concerns with relationships, stress, anxiety, or depression. Services
include, but are not limited to, crisis intervention, short-term individual
counseling, stress management, referrals and medication. Couples counseling
is available for students when both partners are enrolled students. What can be discussed at CC?Any problem that is causing you concern is appropriate. While you may think it is not serious enough to seek help, the determining factor can be the extent to which it seems to interfere with your activities, thoughts or feelings. Most people have occasional problems in relationships with others, especially during the college years when there is so much going on in your life. Relationships with parents, boyfriends or girlfriends, roommates, and even your feelings about yourself may be problematic and stressful. As you continue through Thiel College, you may become concerned about commitment to another person or to a career. Your relationship with your partner can create new conflicts or demands that you had not anticipated. It is common to feel upset, anxious or depressed, and to be unsure about why or what to do. Sexual concerns and behaviors may be distressing, especially if your own values and beliefs differ from those of your family or friends. Some students are uncomfortable with their sexuality or are concerned about what kinds of behaviors are acceptable or healthy. Others have issues related to contraception and pregnancy. These are all appropriate for discussion with CC counselor. How can CC help you?We listen objectively without being judgmental. Having the chance to talk with a concerned counselor can go a long way towards resolving problems. We can offer you the opportunity to understand your feelings and why these feelings are problematic now. You may discover new ways of expressing your feelings and may choose to try out new behaviors. You can then apply these skills to increase your sense of self-control, direction and well-being in your everyday life. There may be times when problems and related feelings
seem so overwhelming that taking medication or a brief in-patient
stay may provide relief. These are not long-term solutions but are intended
to help you feel more comfortable so that you can begin to find constructive
ways of dealing with the difficulties that concern you. Confidentiality at the Counseling Center (CC) Any information that you discuss with your CC counselor is strictly confidential. No information will be released to anyone without your written consent. CC and Student Health Service operate under the administrative auspices of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Information pertaining to health care is routinely shared between these two agencies. Only a release of information in writing signed by you will allow professionals at either agency to discuss or release information to individuals outside The Counseling Center (CC) and Student Health Service. Legally mandated exceptions to this policy include instances in which life is in danger, or if you disclose information about current elder abuse, child abuse or molestation. Our records can be subpoenaed by a court of law if you have mentioned your visits here, and/or if there is sufficient legal cause. Your CC counselor can answer any questions about confidentiality you may have. Requesting a Release of Information from The Counseling Center (CC) No information relating to a student’s contact with CC (aside from the above mentioned legally mandated exceptions) may be released unless the student signs a Release of Information form that specifies the name and address of the professional's office to which the information is to be released, description of the specific information authorized released, and the reason(s) for the release of information. Any information from CC must be released directly to a mental health professional, an attorney, or an insurance agency representative. CC does not routinely release client information directly to the client, and the client is welcome to schedule an appointment with the Director to come in and review their chart. In addition, CC rarely releases the entire contents of a client file; therefore, the specific information requested from the chart must be indicated on the release of information form. It is the policy of CC to release only specified information that is appropriate and in the best service of our clients. Any request for information from CC must be specifically and clearly stated. Please ask your counselor to describe the specific information needed so that you may list it accurately on the Release of Information form. Currently our office does not charge a fee for releasing
information. Consultations to Parents and Confidentiality Consultations to concerned and/or interested parents via phone or in-person are available and welcome at CC. Parents are encouraged to call and discuss any concerns they may have regarding the well-being of their daughter or son with a CC counselor at 724-589-2754. It is important to understand that strict and complete confidentiality applies for all students who receive services at CC and who are 18 years old or older, and that no information will be released to anyone without the student's written consent. CC is not at liberty to confirm or deny that a student has visited CC, nor to disclose any information without a signed Release of Information form. What the CC counselor can provide is general consultation that is specific to your concerns, suggestions and recommendations on how best to enhance your student's well-being, as well as ways to encourage your student to visit CC when appropriate. Other on-campus services that are available to your student may be presented as complimentary sources of assistance. You know your student better than they know anyone, and you are most often the first place a distressed student will turn to for help. Please recommend CC as a resource to your daughter or son, and please do not hesitate to call the CC counselor if the need arises. Consultations and TrainingCC offers consultative services to college administration, faculty, and support personnel on request.
