For Immediate Release: March 20, 2006 THIEL TABS TIM LOOMIS AS HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 20) -- Thiel College announced the hiring of Tim Loomis as its new head men's basketball coach Wednesday afternoon. "With the hiring of Coach Loomis we believe we have a coach who will inspire passion, teach the game of basketball, promote a program to recruits and fans alike while being determined in educating his student-athletes," said Thiel president and CEO Dr. Lance Masters. "We are thrilled that Tim will be joining our team here at Thiel. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that, we feel, will definitely benefit our students. We are very excited about the future of this program under his leadership," said vice president of student engagement and success and dean of students Roseanne Gill-Jacobson. Loomis, who most recently served as the head basketball coach at Kennedy Catholic High School (2001-2006), sports an extensive resume that has included stops at both the NCAA Division I and II levels. He served as the head men's basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University from 1989-1995. Prior to his appointment at Florida Atlantic, Loomis was an assistant at NCAA Division I Penn State University from 1986-1989 and the head men's basketball coach at NCAA Division II California University of Pennsylvania from 1980-1986. Loomis, who coaching experience spans more than 25 years, began his career as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II California University of Pennsylvania in 1978 and took over as the head coach for the Vulcans in 1980. While at California (Pa.), his team won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship in 1985 and were runners-up in the PSAC Western conference in 1983-1984. After the 1984-1985 season Loomis was awarded with PSAC Coach of the Year honors. Loomis also served as an associate professor in the field of regional planning and geography and the president of the PSAC basketball coaches association while at California (Pa.). From California (Pa.) Loomis moved on to State College, Pa. as an assistant coach under Penn State University head coach Bruce Parkhill from 1986 to 1989. While at Penn State Loomis was responsible for recruitment, game and practice preparation and academic guidance in regard to the individual student-athlete. In 1989 the Nittany Lions were selected to participate in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) after advancing to the Atlantic-10 championship game. During his six-year stint as the head coach at Florida Atlantic, Loomis helped advance a second-year NCAA Division II program to a NCAA Division I program in just two seasons. He was responsible for developing the booster club, the academic advising protocol and securing radio and television network coverage while devising a national recruiting strategy. After returning home to Greenville to serve as the head coach at Kennedy Catholic, Loomis advanced the Golden Eagles to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state playoffs in each of his five seasons, including appearances in the finals in 2001-2002 and 2004-2005. A 1976 graduate of Lock Haven University, Loomis went on to earn a master's degree in regional planning and geography from California (Pa.) in 1979. Loomis and his family reside in Greenville. |
