THIEL NAMES STEVE BREWER HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH

Steve BrewerGREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 26) -- Thiel College has announced that Steve Brewer was named head volleyball coach for the Tomcats.

Brewer takes over for Amy Schafer, who will concentrate on her position as the head softball coach after spending last season in the head volleyball position.

"We are extremely please to get a coach of Steve's caliber. His vast coaching experience and recent success as an assistant at Hiram College certainly gives us reason to expect big things out of him," said athletic director Joe Schaly.

Brewer served as head coach Ellen Dempsey's top assistant at Hiram during the previous two seasons, helping lead the Terriers to a 51-17 overall record during those two years. In 2005 Hiram finished 28-5 overall and won the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship with an 8-0 record to advance to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Regional Tournament.

Brewer earned a bachelor's degree in social science from Robert Morris University in 2000 and received a MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2004. He was a co-founder and director of the Renaissance-Cleveland volleyball club, which is heading into its fourth season. Brewer left Renaissance-Cleveland last summer to start the Hiram Volleyball Club. Before moving to Ohio Brewer coached with the Pittsburgh branch of Renaissance for six seasons. Brewer also spent three seasons in the high school ranks as head coach at Bethel Park High School.

Brewer takes over a Tomcat squad that posted an 8-19 record in 2005. 13 players will return from last season, led by sophomore outside hitter Molly Klink (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool), who earned all-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) honorable mention honors.
