For Immediate Release: March 21, 2006 THIEL TO FEATURE NEW BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL FACILITIES NEXT SEASON GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 21) -- Thiel College has announced that it will begin construction of on-campus baseball and softball complexes later this spring. Rendering of new baseball and softball facilities In partnership with the Borough of Greenville, Thiel received the largest grant in the history of the institution to make these additions possible. The state's Recreational Challenge grant will assist with expenses for both the baseball and softball complexes, along with an arts-related facility on the north side of the campus. The fields will be located on the west side of the campus near the borough's Riverside Park. “The new softball field will bring many positives to the program. The field will attract student- athletes because of its on-campus location and quality of playing surface. The new complex will allow us to schedule more home games and bring in more spectators from the campus community to the games. It will give Thiel baseball and softball players a sense of pride for their school and their complexes”, said head softball coach Amy Schafer. “New facilities will give us the opportunity to showcase our baseball and softball programs in addition to hosting local teams and summer tournaments. We are very appreciative of the cooperation we have received from GALSA for many years with the use of Packard Park and Cooper Field. We look forward to being able to help GALSA and the Greenville teams in bringing tournaments to town in the future,” said head baseball coach Joe Schaly. As with the construction of Alumni Stadium in 2001 for the football and soccer programs, the new facilities for baseball and softball will greatly enhance the recruiting of student-athletes, improve fan support and build further community awareness. |
