For Immediate Release: November 10, 2007 THIEL'S HESS CARRIES TOMCATS TO 62-14 VICTORY AT SAINT VINCENT
Hess' 327-yard performance is the highest rushing output of any Division III runner this season (through games played Nov. 3). Along with setting school single-game standards in rushing yards, rushing attempts and rushing touchdowns, he also posted a school-record 30 points in Saturday's win. He averaged 7.6 yards-per-carry on the afternoon. Hess is just 33 yards shy of reaching 2,000 rushing yards in his career. His 1,947 career rushing yards currently ranks him sixth in the Tomcat record book while his 20 rushing touchdowns rank him third. Thiel (3-7) fell behind 14-7 with 10:36 to play in the second quarter, but went on to outscore Saint Vincent Eight Tomcats registered rushing attempts on the day. Senior quarterback/wide receiver Marc LaScola (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) totaled 67 yards on five attempts, junior running back Jeremiah Wagner (Galeton/Coudersport) recorded 38 yards on five carries with a touchdown (4). Freshman running back LaVaunt Griff (East Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) ran for 57 yards on 10 attempts and a touchdown (2) and freshman running back Cody Sirgey (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Northside Christian) added 33 yards on a pair of carries and a score (18). Sophomore running back Mark Dzubak (Greensburg/Greensburg) posted 13 yards on one carry while sophomore quarterback Willie Bova (Port Allegany/Port Allegany) added five yards on a carry. Bova completed 9-of-14 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown while LaScola finished 3-of-4 passing for 24 yards. LaScola caught five passes for 93 yards while senior tight end Eric Ester (Erie/East) caught a pair of passes for 49 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown pass with 7:03 to play in the third quarter. Senior defensive end Chris Lorber (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Benedictine) stood out for the Tomcats defensively as he recorded seven total tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He finishes his career second in sacks (26) and third in tackles for loss (43.0). Senior linebacker Michael Stimac (East Brady/Karns City) added six tackles, an interception and a sack while junior linebacker Sam Swartzfager (Shippenville/Keystone) totaled five tackles. |
