THIEL'S MILLER ADVANCES TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AS WILD CARD,
TOMCATS PLACE SIXTH AT MIDWEST REGIONALS

(Feb. 23) -- The Thiel College wrestling squad finished sixth (of 12) with 84.0 team points at Saturday's 2008 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Qualifier, hosted by Wabash College. Headlining Thiel's seven place winners, the most in head coach Craig Thurber's five-year career, was freshman 125-pound Rob Miller (Transfer/Reynolds), who wrestled to a true second place finish with a 4-1 overall record. Miller was picked as one of five wild card selections out of the Midwest regional.

Miller, who entered Saturday's regional as the number two seed, posted a pinfall victory (1:48) over Keith Closson of Wabash to start the day. Miller fell to third-seeded and ninth-ranked Christopher Sheetz by pin fall (3:56) despite being ahead by a 6-0 margin in the second period. He bounced back and earned a pin fall win (0:28) against fifth-seeded Levi Mundy of Tri-State University before defeating fourth-seeded Kyle Labrecque of Olivet College 3-1 in the third-place match. With Sheetz's 3-2 win over top seeded and number one ranked Eracleo Vallejo in the championship match, Miller was able to wrestle Vallejo for true second. Miller picked up a pin fall win (1:26) over the top-ranked wrestler at 125 and finished his day 4-1 and improved to 28-5 this season.

Sophomore 133-pound Jeff Langdon (North East/North East) and freshman 197-pound Cris Gault (Andover, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley) each finished fourth in their respective weight classes. Langdon, the number three seed, finished 2-2 on the day and fell in the third-place match to fourth-seeded Thomas Pompei of Tri-State University by pin fall (0:41). Langdon concluded his sophomore season with a 17-7 record. After suffering a 5-1 loss to top seeded Joe West of Delaware Valley College in the opening round, Gault responded with three-straight wins, including a 4-0 decision over fifth-seeded Daniel Law of Washington & Jefferson College. He fell in the third-place match to fourth-seeded Alex Fleet of Tri-State University 10-3 and finished his freshman season with an overall record of 13-15.

Junior 184-pound Andrew Riddle (Utica/Franklin) finished in fifth place after entering the day as the number three seed. Riddle's day started with a 7-3 loss to sixth-seeded Joe Bargerstock of Olivet College and finished with his 8-7 decision over Michael Burke of Wabash in the fifth-place match. Riddle concludes his junior campaign with a 22-10 record.

Senior 149-pound Jared Hirtz (Uniontown/Albert Gallatin), sophomore 165-pound Jordan Gaudette (St. Cloud, Fla./St. Cloud) and freshman 157-pound Alex Brown (Oakdale/Plum) each wrestled to sixth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.

The Division III National Championships will begin on Friday, March 7 and will be hosted by Coe College.
