Baseball tops several NCAA D-III statistical categories

GREENVILLE, Pa. (June 13, 2008) – Despite wrapping up their season over a month ago, the accolades continue to mount for the 2008 Thiel College baseball team, this time with the release of a litany of elite statistical rankings by the NCAA.

The Tomcats, who finished 29-15 this past season, led the nation in three team statistical categories including runs per game (11), doubles per game (3.14), and slugging percentage (.582).  Thiel ranked among the top three teams nationally in a total of nine statistical categories, and among the top ten in a total of nine categories.

Prior to the 2008 campaign Thiel had never led the country in any team statistical area.

The Tomcats’ also saw nine players rank in the top ten in all of NCAA Division III in nine different categories, paced by junior Eric Boylan (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox).  Boylan topped the national rankings in doubles with 25 and managed top-ten finishes in doubles per game (fourth, .58), total bases (seventh, 139), hits (seventh, 81), and RBIs (tenth, 63).

Junior Chris Dunham (Conneaut Lake/Linesville) earned two top-ten efforts, finishing eighth in home runs (15) and tenth in RBIs (63).

Also among NCAA leaders were sophomore Justin Scarpitti (Erie/Cathedral Prep.) and junior southpaw Josh Tedesco (Campbell, Ohio/Ursuline).  Scarpitti ranked ninth in runs scored with 62, while Tedesco wound up third-nationally in victories with 11.
