Happy Birthday, Langenheim Library!
Allen Morrill, executive director of the library, singing happy birthday to the library with some Thiel students at a birthday party held on the anniversary this month.
On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Langenheim Memorial Library celebrated its 60th birthday. The Library was dedicated in 1952 and established by Flora E. and Gertrude A. Langenheim as a memorial to their parents, Gustav Christian David and Minna Theresa Schwerd Langenheim. In the 60 years since, the library is still the heart of learning and research on campus — although there are a lot more computers in there now!
Honor Roll of Generosity Available Online
The 2011-2012 Honor Roll of Generosity is available online! The support of Thiel College's students and mission by our alumni and friends during the past fiscal year enables us to provide the resources and support they need to prepare them for successful futures. Thank you to all our donors — we couldn't do it without you!
November Students of the Month
Stephanie N. Dulka, a senior biology and medicinal chemistry major (with minors in medical biology, chemistry and biochemistry) from Alliance, Ohio, carries a heavy load of science and math courses (sometimes carrying 19 credits in science courses alone per semester), but still carries an outstanding GPA and is very involved on campus. She has been a resident assistant, president of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates, member of Tri-Beta, member of the softball team for two years, member of the Dean's List each semester and more. She volunteers at St. Paul's and the Good Shepherd Center, is a gymnastics instructor in Greenville and received an Emil A. Lucas Chemistry Scholarship for 2012-2013. Despite the demands on her time, she is positive, considerate and uplifting in her interactions with others. Her plans for the future include medical school to become a physician.
Emily Whipple, a senior English/secondary education certification major from Rochester, Pa., is an active participant in classes and is an inquisitive and astute learner. She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta (and current president) and was the editor of The Phoenix last year and co-editor this year. She serves as the Student Government Representative for the English Club and secretary of the sophomore honorary, Lambda Sigma, while participating in a variety of volunteer opportunities. In 2011, Whipple was a recipient of the Vira I. Heinz Program for Women in Global Leadership Scholarship, which enabled her to travel to Spain, and upon her return to Thiel she started a program for Domestic Awareness Week. With her 4.0 GPA, Whipple looks for ways to share her talents and is a tutor at the Writing Lab as well as for other courses. She epitomizes what a Thiel education can do for a student.
60th Annual Christmas Festival
The joyful sounds of the holiday season will ring through Thiel College's William A. Passavant Center for the 60th year during the annual Thiel College Christmas Festival on Dec. 2. The Christmas Festival is free and open to the public. With the theme of "Immanuel Is Come," the festival features choral works by Don Neuen, Leo Nestor, Carolyn Jennings and John Rutter. An African "Gloria" for women's choir and percussion also will be performed. As is tradition, the audience will be invited to sing along with the choirs during seasonal carols and hymns. Prelude music for handbells and organ will begin 20 minutes before the concert. The Christmas Festival is presented by the Performing Arts Department and features performances by the Thiel Choir, the Thiel College Chamber Singers and the Thiel College Handbell Ringers. Dr. Michael Bray directs the ensembles with accompaniment performed by Kathryn A. Gray. Can't make the Christmas Festival? The Thiel Choir may be traveling to a town near you to perform. Looking for Scholars
The Dietrich Honors Institute (DHI) is now up and running thanks to the recent gift from William S. Dietrich II and has a goal to build the Institute to 250 students over the next four years. The Institute's emphasis is on celebrating the diverse gifts of students and how such diversity can enrich a community. Recruiting students for fall 2013 is now underway. Requirements to become a Dietrich Scholar are a 3.5 GPA and one of the following: 1100 SAT (verbal and math scores combined), 24 ACT (composite score) or top 15 percent of the class. Students who apply by Dec. 31 (and are accepted by Jan. 11) will be considered for invitation to the Academic Scholarship Competition Days where they can compete for scholarships up to full tuition!
