April 2008 Vol. 1, Issue 2
National Expert on the Liberal Arts Visits Campus Dr. Charles Blaich, director of inquiries at the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts at Wabash College, visited campus on March 19. He was featured at the afternoon’s faculty meeting where he discussed what faculty can say when parents and students ask “What good is a liberal arts education anyway?” Later that evening, he was the featured speaker at the Kemper Seminar where he talked about the practical value of a liberal arts education with Thiel students. He is pictured here with Dr. Derek Nelson of the religion department, who is a Wabash alumnus and helped to arrange Blaich’s visit to Thiel. The visit was sponsored by the Center for Learning and Advising and the Kemper Seminar. Won’t You Wear a Sweater? Day
More than 50 Thiel College faculty, staff and students proudly wore their favorite sweaters and sweatshirts for “Won’t You Wear a Sweater?” Day on March 20 to honor the late Fred Rogers of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” This special tribute is part of the “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” Days in Pittsburgh. Rogers received an honorary doctorate from Thiel College in 1969. The entire Thiel community is proud to say that Mister Rogers was part of our neighborhood.
Spring into Action Day
On April 12, 250 Thiel College students joined with community members to spring clean the Thiel campus and downtown area of Greenville. Volunteers did maintenance work at Riverside Park, Memorial Pool and the Greenville Library as well as landscaping on and around campus. This is the fourth year for the event, which is co-sponsored by the Women's Action Group of the Northern Mercer County United Way.

Alum with Fond Memories of Thiel Makes a Difference Through Scholarship Giving Knute Hamre ’58 recalls that “Thiel College was the only school I applied to and when I got accepted, I was the happiest kid alive. The first time I saw Thiel, I arrived with my suitcase. I realized that I had only enough money saved for my freshman year and my family was not in a position to help me.” He worked a variety of different jobs while a student, and one day started the “Harter Hunks” club on a lark. Russ Meehan’s ’58 father printed membership cards for free, which they sold for $1. At the same time, Thiel started the Student Union Scholarship Fund and each student and faculty member contributed various amounts. Hamre donated the “Hunks” money to the Scholarship Fund. Later, he was given $200 as the first winner (and some friends teased him about a fix). It was the only cash reward he received as a student, but he never forgot it. In 1999, he started the Knute Hamre Leadership Endowment Award. It requires a 3.0 grade average, financial need and demonstrated leadership in various student-led organizations. Currently, the annual award is slightly more than $2,500. Hamre promises that “As long as there is a Thiel College; there will be a Knute Hamre Fund. I have fond memories of Thiel and I’ve always had a real love for the College and its students. I am proud to provide help to needy students.” To find out how you can establish a named scholarship, visit www.thiel.edu/advancement/named.htm or contact Mario Marini '91 at mmarini@thiel.edu or 724-589-2022.
