Executive Director of Facilities Management

Thiel College seeks an Executive Director of Facilities Management to provide administrative and technical oversight and management of major construction projects, routine maintenance of campus properties, buildings, grounds and utilities, and staff and student workers in Maintenance and Housekeeping departments, as well as external staff assigned to campus projects.

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Management, the Executive Director of Facilities Management:

  • Manages structural repairs and maintenance of residence halls, alternative housing, academic delivery areas, student life facilities, grounds, and athletics fields for the campus.
  • Makes recommendations concerning architectural and engineering proposals, and provides financial and statistical data related to short- and long-term planning of major projects.
  • Participates in strategic planning for multiyear construction and facilities development.
  • Provides oversight of campus major construction projects and serves as the primary liaison with external vendors, consultants and engineers.
  • Prepares budget estimates, seeks competitive bidding, and manages contractor selection and successful project completion for major projects and routine maintenance efforts campus-wide.
  • Develops, negotiates and manages the energy/utility programs for all properties.
  • Develops and implements a preventative maintenance management system for all properties to evaluate appropriate usage of properties and ensure periodic maintenance.
  • Establishes, and ensures compliance with, quality measures for all projects.
  • Prepares project and equipment inspection and maintenance reports for local and state authorities.
  • Oversees staff and operations of Maintenance and Housekeeping departments, with direct supervision of Assistant Directors in those areas.
  • Oversees the evaluation and acquisition of materials, supplies, equipment and utilities, including allocation of expenses to projects and departments.
  • Develops and manages casualty prevention and control programs, provides substantial support for the campus risk management and safety programs, and implements specific safety and protective measures for plant operations, maintenance and housekeeping departments.
  • Makes recommendations concerning recruitment, wage rates, selection, retention and assignment of personnel for Maintenance and Housekeeping, and oversees training programs for same, including student workers assigned to these areas.
  • Promotes interdepartmental coordination and cooperation related to facilities and custodial efforts, and coordinates department activities with students and other members of the campus community.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a working knowledge of, and experience in, operation and repair of major systems, such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry.
  • Have a thorough understanding of property management, building construction and related trades.
  • Be able to read blueprints and other related documents.
  • Be proficient in spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Efficiently manage time and resources and be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to accurate, concise delivery.
  • Be able to travel as required and to work from remote locations.
  • Have strong supervisory skills and the ability to develop staff into a cohesive team.
  • Have physical capability, with or without accommodation, to assist with tasks assigned to staff, including the ability to lift heavy objects and operate motorized equipment as needed.
  • Possess a superior commitment to quality assurance and customer service.

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management, or relevant experience and qualifying certifications, is required; Master’s degree preferred. A minimum 5 to 7 years progressively significant and successful leadership of a facilities or construction management team, preferably in a nonprofit institutional environment, is required.
