Academics > Summer Sessions Registration

Summer Sessions 2013

Why take your summer courses at Thiel College?

Thiel’s summer courses offer the same high-quality instruction and academic performance of regular academic year courses, but are smaller, less formal and encourage interaction between students and faculty. All students at Thiel during the summer have access to all academic and recreational services.

Summer courses at Thiel are appropriate for students from other colleges and universities, Thiel undergraduates and others (college-bound high school students or those with a bachelor's degree) looking to delve deeply into an academic topic or earn college credit.

For more information, traditional students should contact the Thiel Academic Records Office at 724-589-2110. High school students should contact Stephanie Wilson, Admissions at 724-589-2345 or dualenrollment@thiel.edu.

Traditional College Students Registration
Dual Enrollment/Thiel Scholars (High School Students) Application

Classes are designed for both degree-oriented students and community persons interested in personal enrichment. We invite you to register for the courses(s) of your choice.  Students taking course work to meet graduation requirements should have approval from their departmental advisor.

Online Classes
Students registering for online courses must have access to a reliable internet connection – DSL, cable or a similar high speed configuration is highly recommended. All students registering for an online course through Thiel College must complete Thiel Online Success, a brief, online prepatory course (the course takes about 30 minutes to complete through Moodle).

Students who previously completed this online prep course are not required to take the course again. The Academic Records Office maintains a list of students who have already taken this course. Students registering for their first on-line course at Thiel College will be enrolled automatically in the prep course and must complete Thiel Online success before May 13, 2013. Students not completing the course will not be permitted to continue with their online summer course.

Student Course Load

Due to the condensed time of each term and the accelerated pace of instruction, each student should be aware that 8 (eight) credit hours is considered to be a full load. A four-to-six credit hour load is more realistic for many students.

Thiel College reserves the right to cancel classes with fewer than five students enrolled unless the instructor offering the course with fewer than five students is willing to teach the course.

Independent study will be permitted and is encouraged.

High School Summer Scholars

High school summer scholars include rising juniors and seniors and graduated seniors. All others considered on an individual basis. Summer Scholars may register from a select list of classes. These are noted in the Course Offerings.

Note: The same policies apply for Summer Scholars as our regular Dual Enrollment program. Summer Scholars must complete the Dual Enrollment/Thiel Scholars application and should not register for classes through the Registrar's office as they are billed at a different rate than traditional students. Please visit the Dual Enrollment page to learn more about requirements, registering, and discounted pricing for high school students this summer! If you have any questions about summer scholars, contact Stephanie Wilson at dualenrollment@thiel.edu.

Traditional Student Fees

Tuition charges for classroom instruction and physical education courses during summer sessions will be at the summer rate of $808.00 per credit hour. Cooperative education credits will be charged at the rate of $808.00 per credit hour and registration must be approved through the Career Services Office. Laboratory and HPED physical activity fees applied where applicable.

Statements will be sent from the Student Accounts Office upon registration and payment is due ten days prior to the first day of class. Students registering after that time will need to make payment in the Financial Services office prior to attending class. The Financial Services Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The withdrawal policy is as follows:

Students may drop classes during the first two days of the session with no tuition charge. After this period, students will receive a grade of W on their transcript. A pro-rata refund of tuition will be made through 25% of the session. There is no refund after that time.

Thiel College will assume a student is enrolled until written notification is sent to the Academic Records Office indicating a withdrawal from the course. The student is responsible to officially withdraw from a scheduled class. Non-attendance does not constitute a formal withdrawal from a course.

Housing

Housing is available to students registered for summer classes and/or working on campus during summer months. Cost will be $100 per week. If you are employed on campus for the summer (a minimum of 20 hours per week) housing cost will be $50 per week.

Contact Rhonda Laird (rlaird@thiel.edu or 724-589-2198) in the Office of Student Life, HMSC, for housing assignment and arrangements. Space is limited for summer housing, therefore, all rooms will be filled to maximum occupancy and private rooms will NOT be available. More information, including check-in and check-out dates will be available from the Office of Student Life.
