Dr. Downer will be on sabbatical for the Spring 2007 semester.

Professor Downer specializes in American politics, law and politics, and political theory. He completed his Ph.D. in political science in 1977 at The University of Kansas. Since that time he has published in the subject matter areas of political theory and public policy. His current research interests have to do with the political writings of the former president of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel.

In addition to serving as chairman of the department of political science, Dr. Downer coordinates Thiel's Semester in Washington program, pre-law advising program, and the legal studies minor. He has lived in Europe for several years, and travels widely outside the United States.
