Activities with the Elderly Activity time at St. Paul's Health Center

GERO 092/Bio 092 Biology of Aging (3 C.H.)
The course focuses on the normal changes in bodily structure and function during adulthood, the factors that influence these changes, and the ways in which these factors interact in the aging process. Abnormal changes resulting from disease, disuse, and unhealthy life styles will also be discussed. Offered in the fall of 2001.

GERO 131/Inds 131 Human Aging in an Aging Society (3 C.H.)
A survey of the field of human aging. This course emphasizes the interdisciplinary and developmental nature of this emerging field of study. Content areas, as well as methodological approaches and theoretical orientations, will be discussed. Offered fall term.

GERO 244/Psy 244 Adulthood and Aging (3 C.H.)
A survey of early, middle, and later adulthood from a life-span developmental perspective. Social, psychological, and biological changes are emphasized. Offered fall term.

GERO 370/SLPA 370 Aging: Communication Processes and Disorders (3 C.H.)
This course explores basic anatomical, physiological, and neurological processes in communication and how these processes change normally with age. The course will also examine specific communication disorders common to the aging process. Not open to freshmen. To be offered during the spring term of even numbered years. (P: SLPA 191* or permission of the instructor)
*This prerequisite is generally waived for students in the Gerontology Minor program.

GERO 391/Soc 391 Sociology of Aging (3 C.H.)
A sociological perspective of human aging. The course will focus on the implications and consequences of aging for individuals in their role relationships, social groups, and society. Students will be exposed to relevant theoretical orientations and research methods. The course will include a cross-cultural comparison of societal attitudes and responses toward older persons. To be offered during the spring term of even-numbered years.

GERO 441/Inds 441 Senior Seminar and Practicum (3 C.H.)
Students will apply principles from the classroom in agencies that serve aging clients. Whenever possible, placements will be in settings that complement the student's major area of study. To be taken during the senior year. Offered spring term. (P: GERO 131 plus three additional courses from the minor)
