The Cleveland Art Museum Students from the History of Western Humanities and Science and Our Global Heritage courses and their professors enjoy a day at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Interdisciplinary courses may be taught by faculty in any department. Many interdisciplinary courses are team taught or use the expertise of numerous faculty as presenters and discussion leaders.

Course Descriptions:

INDS 010-020 History of Western Humanities I & II (8 C.H.)
The course is a chronological exposition of Western culture and civilization from the ancient through the contemporary historical periods. It is a two-semester interdisciplinary sequence required of all Thiel students for graduation. As a foundations course, it should be taken by freshmen and all other new students. Top

INDS 131/GERO 131 Human Aging in an Aging Society (3 C.H.)
A survey of the field of human aging. This course emphasizes the interdisciplinary and developmental nature of this emerging field of study. Content areas, as well as methodological approaches and theoretical orientations, will be discussed. Offered fall term.  Top

INDS 201/BIO 082/HPED 088 Physiological Basis of Exercise and Physical Fitness (4 C.H.)
An overview of the physical and physiological aspects of exercise. Topics covered include biological systems necessary to adapt to exercise; the proper development of an exercise program; nutrition, exercise and weight control; psychological aspects of exercise and beneficial and detrimental aspects of exercise. Students will be required to design and implement a personal excise program. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory. (Lab fee)  Top

INDS 261/SOC 261 American Women's Experience: A Multicultural Perspective (3 C.H.)
This course invites students at Thiel to consider themselves in relationship to American women's experience in contemporary culture. The course provides windows into the life experiences of women in the dominant culture and women whose lives are shaped by Hispanic, Native American, African-American, and Asian communities. We will look at the contributions of these women in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and business. We shall also inquire what factors inhibit women's full participation as bearers and shapers of culture.  Top

INDS 310-320 Science and Our Global Heritage I & II (8 C.H.)

The Fall 2005 Global Heeritage trip to the Cleveland Zoo and Rainforest will occur on Thursday, September 22, 2005. The students will begin the trip about 8:30 a.m and return to campus about 4:30 pm. The Global Heritage teaching team appreciates your willingness to accomodate Global students for that day.

An interdisciplinary, laboratory-centered, multicultural course which examines ways the rich natural and cultural heritage of the globe can be sustained. This complement to History of Western Humanities I and II is to be taken preferably during the sophomore year after the Western Humanities experience. (Lab fee)  Top

INDS 511-541 Humanities Internship (4-12 C.H.)
An off-campus internship experience in the humanities: English, languages, philosophy, religion. An opportunity for junior and senior students to gain practical experience in a field related to their majors. A log book will be required as well as a final paper in which the student will react to the internship both objectively and subjectively, correlating his or her academic knowledge with his or her practical experience.  Top

INDS 555 Cooperative Education (Variable C.H.)
The Cooperative Education Program at Thiel combines classroom study with planned, supervised work experiences outside the classroom environment. Learning to apply theory to the workworld produces a combination of applied knowledge and experience which reinforces the educational process. Cooperative Education credits are also available within the specific disciplines. (P: Permission of the department)  Top

INDS 567/POSC 567 Washington Internship (8 C.H.)
A supervised internship for the duration of the semester or summer program of the Semester in Washington. Placements will be in consultation with each participant.  Top

INDS 568/POSC 568 Seminar: Ethical Issues and Public Affairs (4 C.H.)
The required core seminar of the Semester in Washington. Devoted to study and discussion of contemporary issues and problems in public life with attention to their ethical and moral implications. Field trips, interviews with public figures, and attendance at selected activities in the Washington area are included as part of the seminar's activities.  Top

INDS 569/POSC 569 Topical Seminar (4 C.H.)
A seminar devoted to the study of a selected issue which is particularly relevant to the general theme of the Semester in Washington (ethics and public affairs) and/or which draws upon the distinctive resources provided by the Washington, D.C. area.  Top
