About Thiel > Thiel History

Early Leaders
Leadership for Thiel in its first 32 years came from two remarkable brothers, Henry Warren Roth and Theophilus B. Roth. Sons of John Roth, a Moravian missionary who explored the area in 1771, they became Lutheran ministers and served as Thiel's first and fourth presidents.
Greenville Hall served as administrative offices, chapel, library, science laboratory and men's residence hall until 1916. When it became overcrowded, Memorial Hall was constructed. Dedicated on November 10, 1886, Memorial Hall paid tribute to Martin Luther on the 400th anniversary of his birth.
