Through the Years

Thiel Moves to Greenville

At the Pittsburgh Synod convention in Greensburg in 1869, it was decided that Thiel Hall would become a college and serve western Pennsylvania as Gettysburg College was serving the central portion of the state and as Muhlenberg at Allentown was serving the east. Lutheran colleges in Ohio were Wittenberg at Springfield and Capital at Columbus.

Thiel College began its corporate existence on September 1, 1870, at Phillipsburg, where it stayed until Greenville submitted an elaborate proposal to have the college moved to the Mercer County community.

With a population of 1,848 in 1870, Greenville offered splendid north/south and east/west rail transportation, strong local patronage, exemplary moral and religious conditions and a pledge of $10,000 cash, five acres of land and use of a large academy building.

Thiel College was initially housed in the Union or Central School, made available by the Greenville School Board. The cornerstone for Greenville Hall, the first building on campus, was laid on August 15, 1872, while the dedication took place in conjunction with Thiel's first commencement, June 25, 1874.
