VIRA I. HEINZ SCHOLARSHIPS

GREENVILLE, PA - Three Thiel College junior women
will have the opportunity to study abroad this summer after being awarded Vira I. Heinz Scholarships for Education
Abroad for 2004.
The three scholarship winners - Rachel Freed of Beaver Falls, Pa., Nicole
Nolan of Port Allegany, Pa., and Amy Sarno of Springdale,
Pa. - will each receive $5,000 to study abroad during the upcoming summer. Until this year, only one scholarship
had been awarded annually to a junior woman at Thiel College.
 Freed
will use the award to study at the University of Stuttgart in Germany where she will be enrolled in a six-week
intensive language program. A history and secondary education major with a minor in sociology, Freed has a background
in the German language and has assisted the foreign language department in its development of computerized German
tests.
"The Vira I. Heinz Scholarship will be an excellent springboard to more deeply and richly acquaint me with
the German language and culture, and help prepare me for my future at graduate school," Freed said.
Freed, a 2001 graduate of Blackhawk High School in Beaver Falls, is the daughter of Nancy Freed and the late Roger
Freed.
 Sarno,
an English major and theatre arts minor, plans to study theatre and arts studies in London through the University
of Study Abroad Consortium.
"As an English major and theatre arts minor, this opportunity will be invaluable to me," said Sarno.
"To see the places I have read about, or to stand on a stage of a much grander scale are experiences that
can only be had through studying abroad."
A member of Thiel Players and Sigma Tau Delta English honorary society, Sarno is a 2001 graduate of Springdale
High School and the daughter of Anthony and Robin Sarno.
 Nolan,
an English, French and secondary education major, has spent seven years studying the French language. She intends
to use her scholarship to strengthen her fluency in the language by studying at Chateau Carnot through the Center
for Study Abroad International in Lisieux, France.
"I plan to use this experience not only as a way to gain necessary credits, but also as an invaluable opportunity
for personal development," Nolan said. "I will work hard to learn more about the fascinating French history,
language and culture so that I can someday share this interest and knowledge with my own students."
Nolan, a 2001 graduate of Port Allegany High School, is the daughter of Rodney and Lyn Nolan and the late John
and Connie Thrash.
The Vira I. Heinz Scholarship for Education Abroad award is granted to three junior women students for summer study
and travel abroad. It is intended to enrich each student's academic program, provide opportunity to travel in a
foreign country, and improve international understanding.
The Vira I. Heinz Endowment is one of the Pittsburgh-based Heinz Endowments, which supports efforts to make southwestern
Pennsylvania a premier place to live and work, a center of learning and educational excellence, and a home to diversity
and inclusion.

EASTER EGG HUNT AT THIEL COLLEGE SUNDAY, APRIL 4

GREENVILLE, PA - The sisters of the sorority Alpha
Xi Delta and the brothers of the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon will sponsor an Easter egg hunt this weekend on the
campus of Thiel College.
The annual egg hunt, for children 12 and under, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, on the lawn in front of
the Howard Miller Student Center, which faces College Avenue. In the case of inclement weather, the event will
be held in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center.

18 STUDENTS INDUCTED
INTO PSYCHOLOGY HONORARY

Membership is open to men and women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests. Students
must meet these minimum qualifications: completion of three semesters or five quarters of the college course, completion
of nine semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology courses, rank in the top 35 percent of their class in
general scholarship and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in both psychology classes and in cumulative
grades.

HARTLE NAMED
THIEL COLLEGE CONTROLLER

GREENVILLE, PA - M. Scott Hartle of Hermitage, Pa.,
was recently appointed controller of Thiel College, effective immediately, announced Thiel President and CEO Dr.
Lance A. Masters.
Hartle will be responsible for the college's accounting and financial planning activities.
From 1997 to 2003, Hartle served as vice president and controller of First National Bank of Pennsylvania in Hermitage,
and most recently was responsible for the bank's planning and financial management. At First National Bank, he
also held the position as assistant vice president and manager of finance, as well as assistant controller. In
addition to his position with First National Bank, Hartle was employed from 1986 to1992 at Integra Financial Corporation
in Pittsburgh.
Hartle is a 1986 graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in
accounting.

COMEDIAN SHANG TO PERFORM AT THIEL COLLEGE

 GREENVILLE, PA - Nationally-acclaimed socio-political comedian Shang will appear
at Thiel College at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center at Thiel College.
Shang's humor has been showcased on ABC's "Politically Incorrect," NBC's "Comedy Showcase,"
VH-1's "The List," and Comedy Central's "Comic Justice" and "Comedy Cabana." He has
also performed on HBO's "DEF Comedy Jam" and BET's "Comic View Grand Stand." He has guest starred
on episodes of WB's "The Jamie Foxx Show" and "The Parent 'Hood."
Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., Shang is a Carnegie Mellon University graduate.
The event is being sponsored by Thiel College's Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Services.
The event is open to the public. While admission is free for Thiel students and employees, there is an admittance
fee for the non-Thiel community ($5 for off-campus students with identification cards and $7 without).
