GREENVILLE, Pa. - An article written by Thiel College
associate professor of English Dr. Mary Theresa Hall and junior English and religious studies major Cora Lazor
of Milton, Pa., appeared in the Winter 2002 issue of Intersections, a journal published by the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America Division for Higher Education and Schools.
Titled "The Identity, Mission, Vision, and Goals of a Lutheran College vis-à-vis Bacon's 'Of Studies'
and Newman's The Idea of a University," the article stemmed from a class discussion during a British literature
course.
The article conducts a comparative study of the mission, vision, and goals statements of Thiel College as they
appear in the academic catalog and the ideals set forth by Sir Francis Bacon and John Henry Cardinal Newman on
the topic of a liberal arts education in their respective works.
Hall, who joined the Thiel faculty in 1999, is a resident of Hermitage, Pa.

THIEL CELEBRATES FOUNDERS' DAY FEB. 6
FACULTY, STAFF TO BE HONORED; WALLACES TO EARN THIEL AWARD

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Thiel College will honor eight faculty
and staff members and three local businessmen at its annual Founders' Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6,
in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center, announced Thiel President and CEO Dr. Lance
A. Masters.
The A. Louis and Barbara Thiel Distinguished Service Award will be presented to local residents Archie O. Wallace
and sons Jeffrey A. Wallace and Daniel P. Wallace.
The A. Louis and Barbara Thiel Award is presented to those who demonstrate exemplary character, continuity of leadership,
and long-term service to Greenville and its environs. The recipient must have demonstrated a commitment to the
common good above private interests.
Archie Wallace is a long-time Greenville attorney and partner with the local firm law firm Rowley, Wallace, Keck,
Karson & St. John, LLP. His son, Daniel, also is an attorney with the same firm. Jeffrey is the vice president
of commercial lending at the First National Bank of Pennsylvania in Greenville.
All three Wallaces are active within the community, serving on various civic boards and committees.
The award is named after A. Louis and Barbara Thiel, whose generosity made possible the founding of Thiel College
in 1866. The Thiels dedicated themselves to the welfare of others. The German couple immigrated to western Pennsylvania
in the 1840s, and as their work was blessed with success, they faithfully served family, community and church.

Receiving the Professor of the Year Award will be Dr. Mary Theresa Hall, associate professor of English. Other
faculty awards to be presented are the Distinguished Scholar Award to Dr. Jay A. Ward, professor of English; the
Distinguished Service Award to Judith G. Newton, professor of mathematics and computer science; the Distinguished
Teacher Award to John K. Wise, lecturer in interdisciplinary studies and religion; and the Distinguished Adjunct
Faculty Award to Ruth E. Leone, an adjunct professor in education and mathematics and computer science.
Hall joined the Thiel faculty in 1999. She had been assistant professor of English at Seton Hill College, assistant
professor at Kutztown University, and an English and French teacher at Elizabeth Seton High School and Seton-LaSalle
High School. Hall earned her bachelor of arts degree in English from Seton Hill College, her master of arts degree
in English from Carnegie Mellon University in 1987, and her doctor of philosophy degree from Duquesne University
in 1991. She resides in Hermitage
Ward arrived at Thiel College as an assistant professor of English and communication in 1978. He earned his bachelor's
degree from Butler University, his master's from Indiana Central University and his doctor of philosophy degree
from Ball State University. He taught at Warren Central High School in Indiana and at Ball State University before
coming to Thiel. He resides in Sharon.
Newton began her career at Thiel College in 1971 when she assisted with the college's computer science courses.
After serving as a part-time lecturer in mathematics during 1971-72, Newton rose to the ranks of professor in 1991.
Newton, who earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Santa Clara in California, holds master's degrees
from the University of New Mexico and the University of Pittsburgh. She served as the college's assistant academic
dean from September 1994 to June 1996. She resides in Greenville.
Wise joined the Thiel faculty in 1996 as an adjunct to the religion department. He earned a bachelor of music degree
from DePauw University School of Music and a master of theological studies degree from Boston University School
of Theology. He holds a second master's degree from the University of Notre Dame. He resides in Greenville.
Leone was appointed to the position of adjunct faculty member in the disciplines of education and math and computer
science at Thiel in 1997. For nearly three decades, Leone was employed by the Sharpsville Area School District
where she served 19 years as the school's guidance counselor and nine years as a mathematics instructor. She also
had been a math instructor at Reynolds Area School District and Girard Area School District. Leone earned her bachelor
of education in secondary mathematics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master of education degree
in guidance and counseling from Westminster College. She resides in Hermitage.
Distinguished Staff Awards will be presented to Anthony P. Vaccaro, system administrator; Linda C. Lewis, academic
records specialist; and John J. Armbruster, groundskeeper.
Vaccaro, who joined Thiel in 1984, oversees the college's administrative computing systems. He resides in Greenville.
Lewis arrived at Thiel in 1989 and maintains student academic records. She resides in Stoneboro. Armbruster has
served as the college's groundskeeper since 1997. He resides in Mercer.
Thiel will also confer professor emeriti status to two retired faculty members during the Founders' Day ceremony.
Professor emeritus status will be given to Charles H. Manes, health and physical education, and Dr. Richard B.
Bennett, chemistry. Manes retired from the college in 1997, while Bennett retired in 1998.
A reception follows the ceremony for honorees and their guests.

ANNOUNCES DEAN'S LIST
For immediate release January 15, 2003
GREENVILLE, PA - Three hundred and seven students have
been named to the Thiel College dean's list for the fall 2002 semester.
About 25 percent of full-time students at Thiel achieved dean's list recognition last fall. A student must attain
a grade point average of 3.40 while being enrolled full-time to be eligible for dean's list.
